Nov 2, 2023 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – A strong shooting performance carries Tulane University men's basketball to an 85-64 victory over Henderson State in the final exhibition game before the 2023-24 regular season on Thursday night. The Green Wave shot 57 percent from the field in the contest including a 61.9 percent shooting performance in the first half.
Â
Five players posted double figures in scoring with Kolby King leading the way with 15 points to go with five assists and five rebounds. Sion James followed with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. With a strong second half Tre' Williams finished with 13 points off the bench. Jaylen Forbes and Collin Holloway rounded out the top scorers for Tulane with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
Defensively, the Wave was opportunistic throughout the game swiping 16 steals as a team and forcing Henderson State into 19 turnovers. Tulane turned those steals into easy points scoring 30 fast break points and 40 points in the paint.
Â
The Green Wave got out to a strong start scoring the first seven points of the night and jumping out to an 18-4 lead in the opening minutes. Henderson State chipped away to pull back within one with six minutes left in the half, but Tulane outscored the Reddies 15-10 down the stretch to take a 43-37 lead into the half.
Â
After Henderson State knocked down a three to open the second half Tulane responded with seven unanswered points to stretch the lead back out to double digits. The two teams went back and forth over the next few minutes until the Wave went on an 11-1 scoring run to push its advantage out to 20 with 10:21 left to play.
Â
The Reddies gave Tulane one last run, but it was not enough as Jordan Wood knocked down his second three of the night in the final minute to give the Green Wave its largest lead of the game and an eventual final score of 85-64.
Â
Up next, Tulane will open the regular season in Uptown against Nicholls on Monday, November 6. Tipoff for the season-opener is set for 8 p.m. on ESPN+ from Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
