
Women’s Basketball Battles No. 9 Virginia Tech In 76-70 Defeat at Cayman Islands Classic

George Town, Cayman Islands – Despite a season-high 26 points from Kyren Whittington and giving No. 9 Virginia Tech (5-1) all they could handle, Tulane's women's basketball team (3-3) fell on Saturday at John Gray Gymnasium in the team's second game at the Cayman Islands Classic in George Town in the Cayman Islands.
Whittington shot an efficient 9-for-13 from the field, 1-of-2 from three point range and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. She also had two rebounds, two steals, an assist and five fouls drawn in the game. Hannah Pratt tallied 16 points and a rebound. Marta Galic picked up 12 points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Amira Mabry also reached double figures with 11 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Kalyah Rainey totaled three points and three assists. Irina Parau recorded six rebounds, two points and two assists. Joy Madison-Key tallied an assist and a rebound.
The Hokies put four players in double figures and were led by 24 points from Georgia Amoore. Amoore also handed out seven assists plus five rebounds. Elizabeth Kitley tallied 18 points and eight rebounds. Oliva Summiel totaled 16 points and eight rebounds.
The game featured 12 lead changes and seven tied scores. Tulane shot 41.4 percent from the field (24-for-58), 36.4 percent from three-point range (8-for-22) and 87.5 percent from the free throw line (14-for-16). The team also had 30 rebounds, 10 assists, four steals and one block.
Virginia Tech shot 47.5 percent from the field (29-for-61), 31.3 percent from three-point range (10-for-32) and 88.9 percent from the free throw line (8-for-9). The Hokies also had 36 rebounds, 15 assists, three steals and four blocks.
Virginia Tech barely edged the Green Wave in points off turnovers (14-12) and points off the bench (16-11). The Green Wave won points in the paint (26-18) and fast break points (6-5).
Tulane hung around in the first quarter and only trailed 19-15. The second quarter was Tulane's strongest as the Green Wave enjoyed an 18-12 advantage to go into the break with a 33-31 advantage. Tulane built their largest lead in the quarter when they went up six, 25-19, on the Whittington layup at the 6:11 mark of the quarter. Virginia Tech held a slight 25-18 advantage in the third quarter to lead 56-51 after three quarters. Although Tulane lost the fourth quarter, 20-19, the program whittled the lead down to one on six occasions and tied the score at 63 all with 6:09 remaining in the game before ultimately falling by a final score of 76-70.
Next, Tulane keeps the road trip going and travels to Springfield, Missouri to take on Missouri State on Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
