
Women’s Basketball Earns 67-52 Victory Over Howard

New Orleans – Kyren Whittington's 22 points led four players in double figures as the Tulane women's basketball team (5-4) made it two in a row at home with a 67-52 victory over visiting Howard (1-9) on Sunday afternoon at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Whittington's 22 points was her second time over 20 points in a game this week and fourth time this season. She shot 7-for-13 from the field, knocked down two threes and also went 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Whittington also led the squad with her eight rebounds and five steals. Chiara Grattini scored a career-high 15 points including four threes in seven attempts. She also had four rebounds and three assists. Hannah Pratt chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds. Marta Galic tallied 12 points, four rebounds and a block. Irina Parau recorded four points and seven rebounds plus a team-high five assists. Kaylah Rainey had an assist, a rebound and a block. McKenzi Carter also had an assist and a rebound. Amira Mabry hauled in two rebounds.
Howard was led by 16 points from Iyanna Warren.
The game featured three lead changes and two tied scores. Tulane's largest lead was 18 points early in the fourth quarter. The best run for Tulane was an 11-0 surge in the third quarter. The Green Wave shot 40.4 percent from the field (21-for-52), 35.7 percent from three-point range (10-for-28) and 88.2 percent from the line (15-for-17). Tulane totaled 38 rebounds, 13 assists, nine steals and three blocks.
Howard shot 32.1 percent from the field (18-for-56), 23.5 percent from three-point range (4-for-17) and 92.3 percent from the free throw line (12-for-13). The Bison totaled 31 rebounds, nine assists and eight assists.
After facing a 9-0 deficit to start the game, Tulane outscored the Bison 19-5 the rest of the opening period to lead 19-14. Tulane extended the lead to nine points at the half, 37-28. In the third quarter the team turned the screws defensively in limiting Howard to just nine points to outscore their opponent 16-9. The fourth quarter saw Howard nudge Tulane 15-14 to make the final margin 67-52.
Next, Tulane keeps the homestand going and hosts the Tulane Holiday Classic from Dec. 20-21 at Devlin Fieldhouse. The team will face off against Little Rock on the first day of the tournament at 12 p.m. Also playing on the opening day of the tournament will be Maine and Duquesne 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opening game.

The win made Tulane 2-1 all-time against Howard…This was the first time that the schools have met since 2005 when Tulane earned the 84-79 victory…Those three games are also the only ones that Tulane has on record against current Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schools although Tulane defeated Florida A&M by a 78-34 margin in 2018 when the Rattlers were still a member of the MEAC before they joining the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)…The game was the first time that Tulane was not blocked in a game this season…Irina Parau tied her career-high with five assists…She has had four plus assists in each of her last three games after starting the season only having one such game in her career…This was Kyren Whittington's fourth game of her career with five or more steals…Whittington's eight rebounds were her most rebounds in a game since the 2020 season…Whittington scored 15 points and had six rebounds in the second half today…This was Whittington's fourth 20+ point game of the season…Tulane's defense held Howard to 26% shooting in the second half….The 10 made threes for Tulane today were tied for the 17th most in a single game for the program and the third time this season that program has reached double figures in made three pointers in a game.
