Baseball Swings its Way into Win Column
Feb 26, 2023 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team (1-6) jumped out with six runs in the first two innings and took down St. John's (3-3) by a score of 9-3 on Sunday afternoon inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.Â
First baseman Brady Marget went 3-for-4 at the plate and he, center fielder Brady Hebert and shortstop Gavin Shulz all scored twice.
Â
The Red Storm was held to just six hits (third baseman Blake Mayberry had two) and struck out eight times.
Â
Tulane starter Ricky Castro (1-1), a graduate student right-hander, went the necessary distance to pick up the win, limiting the visitors to two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The Green Wave utilized its bullpen to complete the game as relievers Michael Fowler, Chandler Welch and Blake Mahmood all pitched a perfect inning at the end.
Â
SJU starter Mario Pesca (0-2) had a rough day as the Olive and Blue touched him for six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts. He also had three wild pitches.
Â
Schulz and left fielder Jackson Linn got Tulane started offensively with first-inning RBI and Linn came around to score Tulane's fourth run on one of those errant Castro offerings.
Â
In the second inning, catcher Seth Beckstead smoked the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to make it 5-0 and Marget followed with a run-scoring single to left to tack on one more.
Â
In the fourth inning, Schulz scored on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Brennan Lambert to give the Green Wave a 7-0 lead.
Second baseman Chase Engelhard answered a two-run St. John's homer in the top of the fifth with a solo shot of his own and pinch hitter Reed Kellum knocked in a sixth-inning tally (Tulane's last) on a single to center after the Red Storm scored another in the top half.
Â
UP NEXT:Â Tulane will host double mid-week action Tuesday and Wednesday with 6 p.m. starts against South Alabama and UNO, respectively.
