Middle-Inning Surge Keys South Alabama Win
Feb 28, 2023 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, LA – The visiting South Alabama baseball team sprinkled 10 runs across the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to grab an 11-7 win over host Tulane Tuesday evening inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Jaguars moved a game above .500 to 5-4 overall with the win, while the Green Wave fell to 1-7.
Â
Grant Wood (1-0) was credited with the win, getting USA's last seven outs with three strikeouts. Tulane used seven pitchers with starter Jonah Wachter (0-1) suffering the loss in his second start. He gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings of work.
Â
The Jags were led at the plate by right fielder Colson Lawrence, left fielder Joseph Sullivan and designated hitter Robbie Petracci, who combined to drive in seven runs, all via the home run ball. Shortstop JG Bell added three hits and second baseman Erick Orbeta scored three times.
Â
Tulane catcher Brennan Lambert and left fielder Jackson Linn each posted a pair of RBI, while designated hitter Brady Marget and shortstop Gavin Schulz joined Lambert with two hits.
Â
USA scored the game's first four runs before Tulane answered with run-scoring singles to left by Marget and Lambert in the bottom of the third to cut the visitors' advantage in half.
Â
It was then 9-2 Jaguars in the bottom of the fifth when the home team answered with a three-spot of its own after Lambert doubled down the left field line and Linn drove in two with a single to left.Â
Â
Petracci's two-run shot to right provided the Jags' final runs of the contest and Tulane got its last two scores on a Schulz RBI to right and Jared Hart single to left.
Â
The Green Wave is right back at it on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. home contest against New Orleans in another round of the Pelican Cup. The Privateers are 3-4 on the season.
