FINAL STATS
NEW ORLEANS, LA – University of New Orleans designated hitter Miguel Useche drove home shortstop Kasten Furr with the crucial go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as the visiting Privateers took game one of the Pelican Cup with Tulane, 6-5 Wednesday evening on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
UNO moved to 4-4 overall with the win, while TU dropped to 1-8.
Â
Nolan Daniel (1-0) got the win in relief, despite giving up a game-tying, two-run homer by Green Wave left fielder Jackson Linn in the eighth inning. Daniel also had one strikeout and one walk. Matthew Maldonado got the save, allowing just a walk in an otherwise clean ninth inning.
Â
The Olive and Blue's Teo Banks (0-1) took the loss, giving up a run and a walk, while recording one out.
Â
Useche, left fielder Tristan Moore, third baseman Jeissy De la Cruz and center fielder Isaac Williams all posted a pair of hits. Williams also scored twice and De la Cruz knocked in a pair of runs with a fourth-inning double to center.
Â
Tulane's leadoff hitter, right fielder Brady Hebert, also went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Â
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first two innings until Furr sent catcher Jorge Tejada home on a double to left to grab a 1-0 lead for UNO.
Â
However, Tulane answered with three tallies in the bottom half of the inning. Third baseman Simon Baumgardt ripped his first homer of the season over the wall in left to get things started and second baseman Michael Lombardi scored on a wild pitch to follow. Hebert then knocked in center fielder Jared Hart to round out the frame's offensive output.
Â
The Privateers fought back, though, and grabbed a 5-3 lead on single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, before Linn tied it with the big blast in the eighth.
Â
The Green Wave's Hart also successfully swiped his third base in as many tries in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Next up for Tulane is a trip west for the Los Angeles College Classic this weekend. The Green Wave will face UCLA on Friday (7 p.m.), USC on Saturday (4 p.m.) and will close with a noon tilt against Sacramento State (1 p.m.).Â
