Quakers’ Huge Start Too Much for Tulane on Sunday
Mar 12, 2023 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – The Penn baseball team built a nine-run, eighth-inning lead and held off a last-frame surge by Tulane to take the rubber match of the series, 13-10, Sunday on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Quakers left New Orleans with a 5-6 record, while the Green Wave fell to a 3-14 mark.
Â
Penn starter Ryan Dombroski (1-1) pitched well, limiting Tulane to just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.Â
Â
Ricky Castro (2-2) started for the Green Wave and turned in an admirable performance, himself. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in five and one-third innings. In total, the Green Wave sent six pitchers to the mound and the group whiffed 12 and issued just two free passes, while enduring seven unearned runs.
Â
Penn shortstop Davis Baker and left fielder Calvin Brown both drove in three runs apiece to lead the visitors' offensive effort. Baker also scored three times, as did center fielder Seth Werchan. Third baseman Wyatt Hensler added a two-run blast in the third inning.
Â
Tulane got a pair of RBI from designated hitter Brennan Lambert, left fielder Tracy Mitchem and second baseman Adam Ebling. Jackson Linn, who started in left, also went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Â
Green Wave second baseman Chase Engelhard got the home team on the board first with a two-run triple down the right field line in the second inning.
Â
Linn then answered Hensler's shot with a solo homer of his own in the fourth, his team-leading fifth of the season, to even the score at 2.
Â
The Quakers then scored the game's next five runs before Lambert's two-run shot to right in the seventh narrowed the gap to 7-4. It was his third homer of 2023.
Â
Penn exploded for six more runs in the eighth and then Tulane countered with its five final tallies for the final margin. The production came on RBI hits by Brayden Morrow, Ebling and Jacob LaPrairie, sandwiched around Tracy Mitchem's first collegiate hit which came on a two-run bomb to right. In that inning, third baseman Simon Baumgardt also swiped his fourth base in as many tries thus far this season.
Â
Ten different Tulane players recorded hits and the team drew eight walks.
Â
There is no mid-week action on tap for Tulane next week. The team will be back home for a three-game series against Columbia this weekend (Friday-6 p.m., Saturday-6 p.m., Sunday-1 p.m.).
