Tulane Opens the WNIT at Auburn Friday

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Women's Basketball (18-13) will take the court for its 22nd postseason appearance in program history as it faces Auburn (15-14) on the road in the first round of the WNIT on Friday. The matchup between the Green Wave and the Tigers is set to tipoff at 7 p.m. CT in Neville Arena in Auburn, Alabama.

This marks the third consecutive WNIT appearance for the Green Wave and its 10th overall appearance. Tulane is 11-9 overall in the WNIT including an 8-1 mark in the opening round, but just a 2-7 record in true road matchups. The Wave went 1-1 in the WNIT last season defeating Jacksonville State 80-36 in the first round before falling 77-81 to Alabama in the second round.Â

This will be the eighth all-time meeting between Tulane and Auburn with the Green Wave trailing the series 2-5. Tulane is 0-3 in trips to Auburn including a 52-72 loss in the 2013 WNIT. The last time the Wave faced the Tigers it came away with the 61-59 victory in the championship game of the Tulane Classic on December 22, 2016.

In its last time out, Tulane lost 58-69 in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship to the eventual tournament champion East Carolina. Kyren Whittington led all scorers in the game with 21 points to go with four steals. Marta Galic and Dynah Jones also posted double-digits in scoring with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Three players are averaging double figures in scoring for the Green Wave this season. Jones leads the team with 12.6 points per contest. Galic and Whittington follow recording 11.9 points per game.

Auburn enters the first-round matchup of the WNIT with a 15-14 overall record including a 13-5 mark at home. This is first WNIT appearance for the Tigers since 2014 and the sixth all-time. Auburn is 10-2 all-time at home in WNIT games, including a 5-1 record at Neville Arena.

The Tigers hang their hat on the defensive end of the floor ranking 24th in the country in blocks per game (4.7) and 28th in steals per game (9.9). Two players average double figures in scoring for the Tigers this season. Aicha Coulibaly leads the team with 16.3 points per game followed by Honesty Scott-Grayson at 13.0. The duo also leads the Tigers each averaging 2.2 steals per game.
With a victory over the Tigers the Green Wave will face the winner of Clemson and High Point in the second round of the WNIT.
