Wave Stays Perfect Against Huskies
Mar 23, 2023 | Baseball
Â
The win, which was the Green Wave's seventh all-time in as many tries against Washington, improved its record to 6-15 overall. The Huskies saw their mark drop to 14-5.
Â
The visitors used eight pitchers during the course of the game with starter Jonah Wachter (1-2) getting credit for the win. He went the first two innings, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout and two walks.Â
Â
UW starter Grant Cunningham (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. He recorded just four outs and gave up four doubles.
Â
Tulane fielder Jacob LaPrairie drove in a team-high four runs and third baseman Simon Baumgardt posted three. LaPrairie also scored three times and right fielder Teo Banks went 4-for-5. Center fielder Brady Hebert added three more hits and two runs scored.
Â
Washington first baseman Will Simpson hit a pair of three-run homers in the third and sixth innings to lead the Huskies' offensive charge.
Â
Tulane jumped to a 9-1 lead in the third inning, which included a season-high five tallies in the third frame.Â
Â
In the second inning, second baseman Chase Engelhard and LaPrairie had run-scoring doubles to left center sandwiched around a sacrifice fly to center by shortstop Gavin Schulz. LaPrairie drove in two more with a double to right in the third after Hebert did the same, scoring Engelhard. That set the table for catcher Brennan Lambert's two-run homer to left.Â
Â
The Green Wave added two more after Simpson's third-inning shot, courtesy of a solo homer to left by Banks and an RBI single up the middle by first baseman Brady Marget.
Â
Baumgardt added a solo bomb to center in the top of the sixth, but the home team closed the margin to three (12-9) with four runs in the bottom half.Â
Â
Baumgardt, though, tacked on a two-run single in the top of the seventh to account for the game's final margin.Â
Â
Tulane reliever Michael Lombardi got the final six outs of the game to lower his 2023 ERA to 0.66 in 13 and two-thirds innings.
Â
In all, 10 of Tulane's 17 hits went for extra bases, including seven doubles.
Â
Tulane continues its westward journey with a three-game series at Hawaii this weekend. The Friday and Saturday games will start at 11:35 p.m. CT, while the Sunday contest will begin at 6:05 p.m.
