
Outdoor Track & Field Off to Texas for a Pair of Meets This Week

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane Outdoor Track & Field program continues the 2023 season with a pair of meets this week in Texas. The program starts the trip competing in the 95th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays starting on Wednesday in Austin. The squad is also scheduled to head to San Marcos to participate in the Bobcat Invitational from Thursday - Saturday.
The Texas Relays officially begin with the first four events of the heptathlon (100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m) at 10:30 a.m. Thursday sees the last three events of the Texas Relays' heptathlon (long jump, javelin and 800m) starting at 10:30 a.m. plus the field events at 11 a.m. and the running events at 7 p.m. Thursday is also the first day of the Bobcat Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. with the women's discus. Friday is the third day of the Texas Relays beginning with the men's discus at 9 a.m. The second day of the Bobcat Invitational starts on Friday with the women's shot put at 10 a.m. Saturday is the fourth and final day of the Texas Relays. The action kicks off at 10 a.m. with the women's discus. The final day of the Bobcat Invitational is also on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer.
The program is expected to men's team members Aaron Gilliam, Donie Devane, Roman Schrader, Zander Dunbar, Jalen St. Fort, Bethwel Tum, Tucker Poshard and Matthew Remondet. For the women, the program is expected to send, Victoria Robinson, Janae Dean, Mackenzie Callahan, Macy Turcotte, Reese Ragland, Sophia McNerney, Harper Shaw, Alexis Esteves, Megan Fitzgerald, Cosette Fleury, Kristina Leggas, Kate Sander Alexandra Potts, Maren Butler, Norah Bice, Kara Schiek, Kristen O'Handley, Patricija Ozolina, Laura Fodor, Margot Temines, Kaia Todd, Abigail Heck, Danna Diaz, Alex Sharp, Kara Steele and Olivia Hicks.
Last time at the Raleigh Relays from March 23-25, Bradley Makuvire set the school record in the men's 5000m with a 13:57.67. He was the first Tulane runner to ever go below 14:00.00 and broke a 25-year-old mark set by Amos Kipyegon. His personal-best was one of 18 set by Tulane at the meet. For his outstanding efforts Makuvire was named the AAC Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. He is the first Tulane male student-athlete to take home a weekly award during outdoor season since 2019. The program also had three top-10 overall finishes and saw 10 marks that ranked among the top-10 in the school record book.
The top-10 finishes for Tulane include Kristen O'Handley ranking third in the high jump with a personal-best of 1.72m (5'7.75"), Maren Butler placing seventh in the shot put with a personal-best 14.89m (48'10.25") and Kara Steele finished sixth in the triple jump with a 12.55m (41'2.25"). Butler's throw also ranked her third all-time in the school record book, while O'Handley's high jump placed her fourth.
Butler also had a personal-best and school record book ranking throw in the discus with a 46.77m (153'5). The throw is the third best in the school record book. Other marks that ranked in the school record book from the Raleigh Relays include O'Handley (100m hurdles – 14.12 – 5th), Mackenzie Callahan (1500m – 4:24.78 – 3rd), Allison Nelson (3000m steeple – 11:19.35 – 4th), Janae Dean (women's 800m – 2:09.45 – 6th), Aaron Gilliam (men's 5000m – 14:27.84 – 6th) and Roman Schrader (men's 800m - 1:51.88 – 7th)
Tulane currently has 11 athletes that rank among the top 10 in the AAC in an outdoor event in Roman Schrader – 5th – men's 1500m, Tucker Poshard – 6th – men's 1500m, Reese Ragland – 9th – 1500m, Margot Temines – 9th – 100m hurdles, Kara Steele – 6th – triple jump, Kaia Todd – 10th – triple jump, Francisco Roman III – 10th – men's shot put, Maren Butler – 2nd – women's shot put, Jon Lloyd – 3rd – men's javelin, Matthew Remondet – 9th – men's javelin and Kara Schiek – 4th – women's javelin,
