Tigers Use Ninth Inning Comeback to Even Series
Apr 1, 2023 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's pitching staff and defense held visiting Memphis off the scoreboard for eight innings, but the Tigers came alive in the ninth to get a 3-1 victory Saturday evening on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
Memphis improved to 16-12 overall, while Tulane dropped to 7-20. Both teams are now 1-1 in American Athletic Conference action.
Â
Tigers' reliever Carson Stinnett (1-0) was credited with the win, as he recorded the last two outs of the eighth inning. Closer Dalton Kendrick worked the ninth for his eighth save, striking out two and allowing one hit. Starter Dalton Fowler was strong for the visitors, striking out 12 in the Olive and Blue, surrendering three hits and five walks in five innings. In total, Memphis fanned Tulane 17 times.
Â
Green Wave reliever Michael Lombardi (0-1) suffered his first loss, giving up all three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts and two walks. He recorded two outs. Starting pitcher Chandler Welch was excellent on Saturday, as he struck out six with one walk, while giving up just five hits in seven shutout innings.
Â
Memphis catcher Jonah Sutton and second baseman Jake Curtis each had two hits.
Â
Tulane first baseman Brady Marget went 3-for-4 to lead the Wave's offensive effort. His solo homer down the right field line broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh. It was his fifth round-tripper of the season, a total that ties him for the team lead with Simon Baumgardt and Jackson Linn.
Â
Back-to-back leadoff walks, a throwing error and a wild pitch aided the Tigers' efforts in the ninth, along with Sutton's run-scoring single to left.
Â
Tulane recorded four stolen bases during the game, courtesy of one each by left fielder Brady Hebert, Marget, designated hitter Brayden Morrow and Linn. Hebert now has a team-high eight successful swipes in 10 attempts.
Â
The rubber game of the series will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
