Houston Earns Sweep with Sunday Slugfest
May 14, 2023 | Baseball
Â
The victory gave the Cougars the series sweep and improve the team's record to 31-20 overall and 15-5 in the American Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Green Wave to 14-37 and 7-14 in league play.
Â
Braden Forsyth (2-0) rescued a rocky performance by UH starter Cade Citelli with the win in relief. Forsyth allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks in three and one-third innings. Murray came in and recorded his ninth save, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk while getting the game's final seven outs.
Â
Tulane got to Citelli early and often, chasing him after three innings with seven runs on five hits.
Â
Cristian Sanchez (0-6) suffered the defeat for the home team. He gave up three runs on two hits with one walk. He failed to record an out.
Â
Right fielder Brandon Uhse, third baseman Zac Arnold, shortstop Jon McMillan and center fielder Drew Blanco all scored three runs for Houston.
Â
Center fielder Teo Banks knocked in three runs for Tulane, two of which came on a two-run shot to center in the third inning. Catcher Seth Beckstead gave the Wave a 1-0 lead with a solo homer to left in the second. Right fielder Jacob LaPrairie led the team with three hits, while he, left fielder Brady Hebert, Banks, and Beckstead all scored twice.
Â
Neither team showed a ton of control on the mound, combining for 15 walks (Tulane 8, Houston 7) and four hit batters (Tulane 3, Houston 1).
Â
The homer by Banks gave him 12 for the season and tied Simon Baumgardt for the team lead.
Â
Tulane wraps up the regular season Thursday (6 p.m.), Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.) at Memphis. The Green Wave took two of three from the Tigers in New Orleans during both schools' first league series of 2023.
