May 7, 2023 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Visiting UCF scored all 10 of its runs in the first five innings and kept Tulane's bats mostly quiet as the Knights won the series with a 10-3 victory Sunday afternoon on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The win moved UCF to 27-20 overall and 8-10 in the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave fell to 14-34 and 7-11 in the league.
Â
UCF starter Cameron Leiter (2-2) struck out 11 and worked around six walks in five innings, allowing two runs on two hits. He teamed with relievers Jacob Marlowe and Kris Sosnowski to whiff 16 Tulane batters.
Â
Tulane starter Billy Price (0-2) went three innings in the loss, giving up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. The Green Wave used six pitchers, with relievers Michael Fowler and Blake Mahmood finishing strong. The duo yielded just one run through the contest's last four and two-thirds innings with eight strikeouts between them.
Â
Seven home runs were hit between the two teams, with UCF shortstop Drew Faurot belting a two-run shot in the second and a solo homer in the fifth. Center fielder John Rhys Plumlee swatted a two-run bolt to left in the fourth, while right fielder Matt Cedarburg did the same in the fifth.
Â
For Tulane, left fielder Brady Hebert and center fielder Teo Banks crushed back-to-back solo shots in the bottom of the fifth to get the home team on the scoreboard. Jackson Linn added another in the bottom of the ninth for the game's final margin.
Â
Neither team made an error.Â
Â
Tulane will play its final midweek game of 2023 on Tuesday when it travels to South Alabama. The Jaguars are 23-24 this season after getting swept on the road at Sun Belt foe Southern Miss this weekend.
