POSTGAME TULANE PRESS CONFERENCEÂ | POSTGAME LSU PRESS CONFERENCE
BATON ROUGE, LA – LSU pitcher Paul Skenes went the distance for the first time this season to fuel a 7-2 victory by #5 national seed LSU over Tulane on the first day of action at the 2023 Baton Rouge Regional.
Â
The win improved the Tigers to 44-15, while Tulane dropped to 19-41.
Â
LSU will now face Oregon State (40-18), who defeated Sam Houston (38-24) by the score of 18-2 Friday evening. Tulane will play the Bearkats in an elimination game six hours earlier at 2 p.m.
Â
Skenes (11-2) struck out 12 with no walks, giving up a seventh-inning two-run homer to Tulane designated hitter Brennan Lambert for the game's lone home run. Skenes yielded seven hits in a 124-pitch effort that saw him reaching 101 miles per hour in the ninth frame.
Â
Tulane starter (5-9) Dylan Carmouche took the loss, surrendering six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks in four-plus innings. Green Wave reliever Michael Lombardi pitched admirably, allowing just one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk in three and two-thirds innings.
Â
LSU center fielder Dylan Crews went 3-for-5, while catcher Hayden Travinski and designated hitter Cade Beloso recorded two hits.Â
Â
Tulane first baseman Brady Marget hit the ball hard all day and went 2-for-4.
Â
The Green Wave hit the ball on the screws during the at-bats where it made contact on Skenes but ran into some unfortunate luck as well. The Tigers were able to double off Olive and Blue baserunners in the second and fifth frames.
Â
"Congratulations to (LSU)," said Tulane head coach Jay Uhlman. "(Skenes) pitched really well and our guys were up to the challenge. We had some spots where a couple of things could've changed the fortune of the game a little bit and made it tighter, earlier. Dylan Carmouche, on short rest, went out there and battled. I thought Michael Lombardi pitched really well and hung some zeroes. (Brennan Lambert) put a big charge into one and got us close."
Â
"The fact that (LSU) ran Skenes out for 120-plus pitches, and didn't go to its bullpen against us, I'd like to take a measure of respect. We'll live to fight another day and be back tomorrow against (Sam Houston)."
