
The Green Wave Falls Short After a Third Set Comeback

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - After a huge third set win, Tulane fell short to Weber State 3-1 (25-10, 25-15, 24-26, 25-22) on the second day of the Islanders Classic.
The Green Wave was led offensively by freshman outside hitter, Avery Burks, and redshirt sophomore outside hitter, Ilayda Demirtas. The two finished the match with 11 kills a piece.
Defensively, graduate libero, Lauryn Burrows, had 25 digs and sophomore middle blocker, Sabrina Skyers finished the match with five assisted blocks.
The first set was owned by Weber State. After a service ace by Burrows to start the Green Wave off, the Wildcats quickly answered and commanded the momentum. They ended up scoring seven unanswered points and kept the lead through the remainder of the set. Weber State won the set 25-10.
Tulane started off firing in the second set going up 4-1 early. However, after six unanswered Weber State points, the Wildcats took the momentum back and gained the lead. Tulane remained within striking distance at 13-10 but Weber State kept the lead. The Green Wave lost the set 25-15.
In the third set, Weber State went up early at 4-1. However, after a kill from Demirtas, and five service aces from graduate defensive specialist, Savannah Perry, the momentum switched to the Green Wave and it took the lead. The remainder of the set was back and forth and consisted of eight ties. Tulane came out on top (26-24) and forced a fourth set.
The fourth set brought another back and forth battle. The Wildcats went up 10-4 quickly but Tulane was on their tail. Tulane had six unanswered points and was able to tie Weber State at 13 apiece. The Wildcats led for the remainder of the set with Tulane nipping at their heels. Despite the Green Wave coming within two at 24-22, a Weber State kill ended the match at 25-22.
The Green Wave will take on UTRGV tomorrow in the final day of the Islanders Classic before they head back to New Orleans. The first serve is set for 1:00.
