
Track & Field Restarts Indoor Season this Weekend in Kentucky

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane indoor track & field program restarts the competition schedule this weekend with a trip to Kentucky for the 2024 Rod McCravy Memorial Meet at the Norton Sports & Learning Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The meet is being hosted by the University of Kentucky and goes from Jan. 12-13.
The program is expected to send Robyn Larkan (60m & 200m), Alexis Esteves (300m, 4x400m relay), Elena Liano-Rengel (400m, 1000m, 4x400m relay), Abigail Heck (400m, 4x400m relay, 4000m DMR), Maddy Luscombe (800m, 1000m, 4x400m relay, 4000m DMR), Anna Schadel (800m, 1000m, 4000m DMR), Janae Dean (1000m, 1 mile, 4x400m relay, 4000m DMR), Danna Diaz (1 mile, 3000m, 4x400m relay), Lily Bell (1 mile, 3000m), Sophia McNerney (1 mile, 4x400m relay, 4000m DMR), Paula Vaquera (1 mile, 3000m, 4000m DMR), Reese Ragland (1 mile, 4x400m relay, 4000m DMR), Amanda Soldan (1 mile), Macy Turcotte (3000m, 4000m DMR), Brenda Ellis (3000m), Alex Sharp (3000m), Kaia Todd (60m HH, long jump, triple jump, shot put), Laura Fodor (60m HH, high jump, shot put), Patricija Ozolina (60m HH, long jump, shot put), Sofie Groeninger (60m HH, high jump, long jump, shot put), Karlijn Schouten (pole vault), Bella Gonzalez (shot put), Alyssa Dismuke (shot put) and Norah Bice (shot put)
The other teams that are competing this weekend in Kentucky are Alabama State, Cincinnati, Louisville, Ohio State, Butler, Howard, Miami (Fla.), Texas, UCF, Indiana and Miami of Ohio.
The field events on Friday start with the women's high jump at 11 a.m. The track events on Friday begins at 2 p.m. with the first round of the women's 60m. Saturday's field event start at 11 a.m. with the women's triple jump. The track event on Saturday kick off at 11 a.m. with the 60m women's semifinals.
Tulane competed in pair of meets during the late fall semester. Jack Jennings ran the school's second-fastest 5,000m time, 13:56.71, at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston on Dec. 2. The rest of the team competed at the BSC Panther Invitational on Dec. 1. The team totaled an event win, 10-top-10 finishes and 19 personal-bests on the afternoon in Alabama.
Karlijn Schouten won the women's pole vault with a 4.00m/13'01.50" to lead the squad.
Elena Liano-Rengel was the runner-up in the women's 1000m with a 2:56.94. Brianna Kirsch placed fifth 3:03.51, while Anna Schadel earned sixth (3:03.70).
Zander Dunbar finished third in the men's 1000m with 2:37.59. Sam Cohen took fifth in the event with a 2:38.69.
Laura Fodor placed fourth in the women's long jump with 5.60m/18'04.50".
Fodor also earned fifth in women's 400m with a 58.35.
Mason Wong placed 10th in the men's 3000m with an 8:45.08.
The 4x400m relay team of Fodor, Esteves, Liano-Rengel and Schadel placed fourth in their event with a 3:59.01.
The personal records set include Brenda Ellis (3,000m), Amanda Soldan (3,000m), Mason Wong (3,000m), Elena Liano-Rengel (1,000m), Briana Kirsh (1,000m), Anna Schadel (1,000m), Kaia Todd (high jump), Laura Fodor (long jump and 400m), Lee Harris (60m), Bella Carroll (60m and the 200m), Alexis Esteves (400m), Alyssa Taylor (400m), Zander Dunbar (1000m), Sam Cohen (1000m), Shamiso Zihumo (triple jump), Patricija Ozolina (200m) and Sofie Groeninger (long jump).
During indoor season for the 2022-23 school year, the Tulane women had a total of four All-Conference AAC members in Kara Steele (1st – triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd - mile), Victoria Robinson (2nd – 800m) and Kristen O'Handley (1st – Pentathlon). Tulane placed fourth overall during indoor season, with 65.5 points, which was the highest-ever finish for the program in the AAC. O'Handley ended the year by achieving All-American status in the Pentathlon. During outdoor season, the Tulane women placed sixth overall with 63 points. The finish was Tulane's best since 2016. The Tulane men finished eighth during outdoor season with 26 points. The program totaled nine All-Conference selections during outdoor season in Janae Dean (1st – women's 800m), Victoria Robinson (3rd – women's 800m), Kara Steele (3rd – women's triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (3rd - women's 1500m), Aaron Gilliam (3rd – men's 1500m), Bradley Makuvire (3rd – men's 5,000m), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd – women's 3000m steeplechase), Maren Butler (3rd – women's shot put), Margot Temines (3rd – women's heptathlon). Kristen O'Handley ended the outdoor season by achieving All-American status in the Heptathlon.
Next, the program competes at the Samford Open Invitational from Jan. 18-19 in Birmingham, Alabama.
