New Orleans, Louisiana – Tulane's women's basketball team (7-7, 0-3 AAC) looks to snap the current three-game losing streak with a home contest against East Carolina (9-5, 2-1 AAC) on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse. All the Tulane games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
Last time out, despite being shorthanded two starting guards and facing a 21-point deficit in the second half, Tulane put up a great fight in falling to South Florida 70-63 at home on Jan. 6. Marta Galic led the team with her 23 points. She also had seven rebounds and five assists. Hannah Pratt also reached double figures for Tulane with 16 points. Irina Parau had a steady all-around game with six points, seven rebounds and six assists. Chiara Grattini, in her second career start, contributed seven points and a career-high five rebounds.
East Carolina, under the direction of Kim McNeill, won the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament last season to secure the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The team has won seven of the last nine games since the end of November with the only losses coming to current No. 1 nationally ranked South Carolina on Dec. 30 and to UAB on Jan. 10. Danae McNeal is the leader on the team with her average of 18.2 points per game. She also leads the club and is fourth in the NCAA with 54 steals. Amiya Joyner is nearly averaging a double-double at 11.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 24 blocks. Micah Dennis sports an average of 8.9 points per game. She also has a team leading 39 assists. The team was predicted to place second in the AAC this season.
Tulane leads the all-time series with ECU by a 21-11 count. The Green Wave have won three of the last five games. ECU defeated Tulane the last time these two schools met by a 69-58 score in the Quarterfinals of the AAC Basketball Tournament last season. The Green Wave are 10-4 all-time in home games against the Pirates.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this weekend's game, Tulane gets back on the road and travels to North Carolina to take on the Charlotte 49ers (11-5, 4-0 AAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 5:30 p.m.
