
Women’s Basketball Hosts Charlotte and Travels to UTSA This Week

New Orleans, Louisiana – Tulane's women's basketball team (8-11, 1-7 AAC) hosts Charlotte (12-8, 5-3 AAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse before a road trip to San Antonio to face off against UTSA (10-9, 4-4 AAC) on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center. All the Tulane games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
Last time out, Tulane fell at home to Temple by a 68-50 score on Jan. 28 at Devlin Fieldhouse. Kyren Whittington, after missing the last five games due to injury, returned to the court and led Tulane with 14 points. She shot an effective 6-for-7 from the field. Amira Mabry scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 10 points. Irina Parau hauled in a season-best 12 rebounds. Hannah Pratt totaled nine points and six rebounds. Kaylah Rainey and Joy Madison-Key tied for the team lead with three assists each. The Green Wave led after the first basket of the game but could not regain the advantage after that as the program shot 33.3 percent from the field and 10 percent from beyond the arc. The team's 50 points were the second fewest points scored in a game this season (behind the 44 put up against Rice – 1/20/24). Tulane is now 1-7 in league play this year for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The team's current four-game losing streak is only the 13th time that Tulane has lost four or more consecutive games since 1994 (922 games).
Charlotte, under the leadership of Cara Consuegra, are off to strong start in their first year as part of the AAC. The 49ers have lost three of their last four games after starting AAC play with four consecutive victories. Dazia Lawrence leads the team at 17.7 points per game. She also has a team-high 39 stelas. Tracey Hueston is also averaging in double figures at 13.1 points per game. Keanna Rembert leads the team with 107 rebounds. Olivia Porter has a team-best 59 assists.
UTSA are in their first year as part of the AAC this season. The program's leader is Karen Aston. The Road Runners have lost their last two games following a four-game conference winning streak. Elyssa Coleman leads a balanced attack with her average of 11.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Kyra White is also getting into double figures at 11.3 points per game. She also leads the team with 97 assists. Sidney Love totals 10.7 points per game and leads the squad with 25 steals.
Tulane leads the all-time series with Charlotte 15-10. The first game of the series 63-41 Charlotte victory in 1992. The 49ers defeated Tulane 66-64 early this month and have won the last two games of the series and five of the last six meetings.
The Green Wave leads UTSA 3-2 in the series. The schools first met in 1987 with the Road Runners earning a 69-66 overtime victory. Tulane won the last game of the series by a 75-66 score in 2016. The Green Wave have earned victories in the last three meetings with the Road Runners, which is the longest streak in the series. This will be the third straight game hosted by UTSA in the series.
Tulane under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this week's games, Tulane hosts UAB on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse and gets on the road to face off with Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m.
