New Orleans, Louisiana – Tulane's women's basketball team (7-6, 0-2 AAC) attempts to get back to the winning ways as the program welcomes in South Florida (9-6, 1-1 AAC) on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse. All the Tulane games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
The home game will be the first for the program since hosting the Tulane Holiday Tournament from Dec. 20-21.
Last time out, Tulane lost the team's second straight conference contest in a 72-54 road loss to Tulsa on Jan. 2. Marta Galic led the team with her 12 points. Amira Mabry also reached double figures with 10 points. Irina Parau totaled a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss. Joy Madison-Key had career-highs of six points and five assists. The loss to Tulsa was the first for the program in the last nine meetings and only the 10th time that the Hurricane have defeated the Green Wave in the series.
In the first game of the road trip on Dec. 30, the Green Wave fell to Wichita State by a 63-60 margin. Kyren Whittington led the squad with her 17 points. She also tallied a team-high four assists and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Galic totaled 15 points including 10 tallies in the fourth quarter. Mabry put up 10 points and seven rebounds. The loss in the conference opener made Tulane 17-13 in the league lid-lifter under Coach Stockton.
For her strong performances over the course of last few weeks, Galic was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's (LWSA) Player of the Week. She averaged 19 points and five rebounds over the course of the three games. It was the second time that Tulane has had a player named the LSWA Player of the Week as Whittington captured the honor on Dec. 11.
South Florida, who are under the direction of Jose Fernandez, are one of the premier programs in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The team has split the first two games of the conference season with a 70-61 victory over SMU on Dec. 30 and then a 66-61 overtime loss to Charlotte on Jan. 3. Three of the team's six losses have come to ranked opponents and five of the six were against schools based in the AAC, SEC, Big-12 and Pac-12. Vittoria Blasigh is the team leader at 14.3 points per game. She is shooting 39.4 percent from three-point range and ranks ninth nationally in made threes (43). Carla Britto is picking up 9.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Aerial Wilson has handed out 64 assists. South Florida was predicted to win the league this year.
The Bulls lead the all-time series with Tulane 30-20. South Florida have won two in a row and 21 of the last 22 games against the Green Wave. Tulane is looking for only the fourth victory over the Bulls since the 2003 season.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this week's game, Tulane keeps the homestand going and hosts East Carolina (8-4, 1-0 AAC) on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse.
