NEW ORLEANS - Tulane women's basketball (0-1, 0-0 AAC) fell to Nicholls (1-1, 0-0 SLC) in its home opener Thursday, 65-63, at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave put up a strong fight in its first game under new Head Coach Ashley Langford, rallying late to nearly capture the victory.
The Colonels edged Tulane with a clutch performance by Jesslyn Jalomo, who led all scorers with 23 points, shooting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Nicholls' shooting proved to be the difference, as the team overcame Tulane with 12 three-pointers.
Senior transfer Sherese Pittman led the Wave in her debut, scoring 14 points on an efficient 2-of-3 from the field and 9-of-12 at the free-throw line. She also contributed four rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Amira Mabry added 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Kyren Whittington chipped in with 11 points. Dyllan Hanna led the Olive and Blue with 13 rebounds.
Tulane rallied in the final minutes of the game. After Nicholls had taken a slight lead, the Wave responded with strong defensive plays and timely baskets to tie things up at 63-63. However, the Colonels took back the lead with a score of their own, ultimately securing the 65-63 victory.
Next up, Tulane heads into SEC country to take on the Missouri Tigers on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CT.
