
Women’s Basketball Loses 80-79 Overtime Heartbreaker to Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN – Despite 33 points from Kyren Whittington, Tulane's women's basketball team (10-13, 3-9 AAC) lost an overtime heartbreaker to Memphis (8-14, 4-7 AAC) by an 80-79 score to the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Whittington shot 12-for-21 in the game in scoring her career-high 33 points. She also led the team with five assists. Amira Mabry totaled 13 points and nine rebounds plus two blocks. Joy Madison-Key picked up a career-high 10 points. Irina Parau recorded seven points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Hannah Pratt totaled four points. Chiara Grattini totaled four points.
Memphis was led by Madison Griggs 20 points. Alasia Smith recorded a game-high 11 rebounds in the victory for the Tigers.
Tulane's largest lead with 12 points at the end of the first quarter, 24-12. The Green Wave scored 44 points in the paint. Tulane shot 53.7 percent from the field (29-for-54), 38.5 percent from three-point range (5-for-13) and 72.7 percent from the free throw line (16-for-22). The program also had 39 rebounds, 13 assists, 10 steals and four blocks.
Memphis' largest advantage was 10 points early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers shot 35.6 percent from the field (29-for-82), 40 percent from three-point range (8-for-20) and 66.7 percent from the line (14-for-21). Memphis pulled down 44 rebounds, had 12 assists, 15 steals and seven blocks.
Tulane started strong and led 24-12 after the first quarter. The Tigers had a strong second quarter in outscoring the Green Wave, 25-17, but Tulane still held onto the advantage at 41-37 at the break. Memphis kept coming and outscored the Green Wave 19-14 in the third quarter to take the 56-55 advantage. Tulane caught up and tied the game and had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation but the made basket from Parau was waved off as it came after the buzzer to take the game into overtime knotted at 74 all. In the extra session, Memphis held a slight 6-5 advantage to come away with an overtime victory.
Next, Tulane heads back home to take on SMU at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14 at Devlin Fieldhouse
