
Women’s Basketball Hosts SMU and Travels To Temple This Week

New Orleans, Louisiana – Tulane's women's basketball team (10-13, 3-9 AAC) returns home to host SMU (11-12, 5-7 AAC) on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse before a road trip to Philadelphia to take on Temple (13-10,  7-4 AAC) on Monday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. at McGonigle Hall. All the Tulane games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
Last time out, Tulane fell 80-79 in overtime to Memphis on the road on Feb. 10, at Elma Roane Fieldhouse in Tennessee. Kyren Whittington, in her first start since returning from injury, scored a career-high 33 points. It was her fifth time scoring 20 or more points in a game this season, her second time scoring more than 25 and first-ever time reaching 30. Whittington was the first Tulane player to score 30 or more points since Arsula Clark during the 2020 season. Amira Mabry just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. She has now scored in double figures in nine straight games. Joy Madison-Clark scored a career-high 10 points in the contests. For Tulane, who shot 53.7 percent from the field in the game, it was only the second time this season that the program lost when shooting better than 50 percent from the field. Tulane is now 0-8 when the opponent scores 70 or more points this year. Earlier in the week, Tulane lost at home to UAB by a 94-77 margin. Whittington led the team in scoring with 16 points. The Green Wave put five players in double figures in the game for the first time this season.
SMU, under the leadership of Toyelle Wilson, come into the game having won three of the team's last five games. The Mustangs are only 2-7 in road and neutral site games this season. Tiara Young leads the team with her average of 17.9 points per game. Chantae Embry is also in double figures at 12.1 points a contest. She also leads the team with 24 made threes. Amirah Abdur-Rahim sports averages of 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Reagan Butler leads the club in assist with 65.
Temple is coached by Diane Richardson. Temple have won three of the team's last four games. Tiarra East leads the club at 11.8 points per game. She also has a team-high 33 steals. Aleah Nelson ranks squad with her averaged of 11.7 points per game. Rayne Tucker totals 8.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
Tulane leads SMU 26-15 in the all-time series. The first game of the series was a 72-62 victory for Tulane in 1980. Tulane earned the 52-50 victory last season in the last game of the series. The Green Wave have won two straight and 11 of the last 13 from the Mustangs.
Tulane and Temple are tied at eight in the all-time series after the Owls defeated the Green Wave 68-50 at the end of January. The first meeting of the series was a Temple 75-71. The Owls have won the last time against Tulane.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this week's games, Tulane hosts Memphis on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse before getting on the road to Florida to take on Florida Atlantic on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. and USF on March 2 at 6 p.m.
