Women’s Basketball Falls To UAB 94-77

NEW ORLEANS – Despite 16 points from Kyren Whittington, Tulane's women's basketball team (10-12, 3-8 AAC) could not overcome the hot three-point shooting from UAB (17-6, 8-3 AAC) in a 94-77 loss to the Blazers on Wednesday evening at Devlin Fieldhouse. The loss snapped Tulane's two-game winning streak.
Whittington shot an efficient 6-for-9 from the field in just over 18 minutes on the floor. She also had four steals. Hannah Pratt recorded 14 points and three rebounds. Amira Mabry tallied 12 points and eight rebounds. Marta Galic picked up 11 points, two rebounds and an assist. Irina Parau totaled 10 points and three rebounds. Joy Madison-Key had a career-high 10 assists to go with four points and three steals. Kaylah Rainey picked up six points, two assists and three steals. Chaira Grattini and Jaylee Womack both scored a basket.
UAB was led by 28 points from Maddie Walsh. Walsh hit an astounding eight threes in 10 attempts. Ashton Elley had 15 points on five made threes. Denim DeShields and Mia Moore each picked up 13 points. DeShields also handed out 10 assists and Moore had 12 rebounds.
Tulane's largest lead with 10 points early in the second quarter, 24-14. The program was outscored 80-53 the rest of the way as UAB got red-hot from three-point range. Tulane controlled the paint and held a 34-24 advantage. The Green Wave also scored 26 points off turnovers and led in fast break points, 26-14. Tulane shot 50 percent from the field (30-for-60), 31.8 percent from three-point range (7-for-22) and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (10-for-13). The program also had 27 rebounds, 15 assists and 12 steals.
UAB's largest lead was 22 points with 44 seconds remaining in the game, 94-72. The Blazers shot 56.9 percent from the field (33-for-58), 58.8 percent from three-point range (20-for-34) and 66.7 percent from the line (8-for-12). UAB pulled down 30 rebounds, had 26 assists plus seven steals and one block.
Tulane started strong and led 22-14 after the first quarter. The Blazers took the lead back in the second quarter as they outscored Tulane 30-19 to take the 44-41 advantage into the break. UAB came out firing in the second half as they outscored the Green Wave, 29-15, in the third quarter to take the 73-56 lead into the fourth. Tulane played UAB to a standstill in the fourth as both teams scored 21 points in what would be a 94-77 loss for the Green Wave.
Next, Tulane gets back on the road and takes on Memphis on Saturday at 2 p.m.
