Wave Falls on the Road to FAU
Mar 2, 2024 | Men's Basketball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Tulane University men's basketball (13-15, 4-12) was unable to erase a 20-point deficit despite a furious come from behind effort in the second half as the Green Wave suffered its sixth loss in a row falling 79-73 at Florida Atlantic (22-7, 12-4) Saturday. Tulane battled to the final whistle pulling within two possessions, but the Owls made just enough free throws to hold off the Wave.
The six-game losing streak for the Green Wave is the programs longest since dropping eight in a row during the 2019-20 season.
Tulane outscored the Owls on second chance points (16-8) and bench points (21-16) but struggled from the charity stripe shooting just 58.3 (14-of-24) percent on free throw.
The Green Wave was led by three players in double figures paced by Collin Holloway with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Holloway tallied 16 of his 19 points during the second half comeback attempt by the Wave.
Kevin Cross and Jaylen Forbes each finished with 14 points. Cross also dished out a pair of assists and added one block. In his first career game off the bench at Tulane, Forbes matched the team-high with five boards and two steals to go with his 14-point performance.
Vlad Goldin led four players in double digits for the Owls finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Alijah Martin also posted a double-double for FAU tallying 13 points and 11 boards.
Tulane got off to a solid start in the first half as the Wave and the Owls exchanged the lead six times over the first eight-plus minutes of action. The Green Wave matched its largest lead of the day at 24-19 with 8:45 on the clock before FAU closed the opening half on a 17-5 run to put Tulane down 36-29 at the break.
The deficit grew to as many as 20 points for the Wave in the second half. Tulane trailed 55-35 with 13:16 remaining but did not go down without a fight.
The Green Wave chipped away to pull within 10 points on four separate occasions, but each time the Owls responded to keep Tulane at bay. Tulane made one final push in the closing minutes cutting the deficit to six with under a minute to play. However, FAU was clutch from the free throw line to finish the game as the Green Wave ultimately lost 79-73.
Up next, Tulane play No. 25 South Florida in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday, March 5. Tipoff between the Green Wave and the Bulls is set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
