Mar 8, 2024 | Baseball
Â
The victory was the Green Wave's seventh in a row and improved the team's record to 10-4. The Ragin' Cajuns fell a game below .500 at 6-7.
Â
TU first baseman Brady Marget, center fielder Teo Banks and shortstop Marcus Cline all had two hits, while Banks scored three times. Second baseman Connor Rasmussen drove in three runs, including a two-run double in the first inning, as did left fielder Jackson Linn. One of Banks' hits was an RBI-triple to extend Tulane's lead in the ninth.
Â
For the Ragin' Cajuns, shortstop Kyle DeBarge and first baseman Trey LaFleur had a pair of hits to go with two RBIÂ each by pinch-hitters Conor Higgs and Mason Zambo. Center fielder Maddox Mandino scored twice.
Â
The Wave's Henry Shuffler (2-0) picked up his second win in relief. He gave up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. He yielded the mound to Jacob Moore, who hurled clean eighth and ninth innings for his first save.
Â
UL-Lafayette reliever JT Etheridge (0-2) suffered the defeat. He was tagged for four runs (three earned) on one hit and two walks.Â
Â
Tulane trailed 8-2 through six innings before Linn and Cline had back-to-back homers in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit in half.
Â
The visitors went on top with four runs in the eighth. Pinch hitter Tracy Mitchem and right fielder Brock Slaton drew the Wave within one with RBI, while Rasmussen and pinch runner Adam Ebling raced home on a Cajun error to put Tulane up 9-8.
Â
The two ninth-inning insurance runs accounted for the game's final margin.
Â
Tulane stranded 13 runners on the evening to the Cajuns' seven.
Â
The game was halted by a 30-minute weather delay in the top of the first.
Â
The two teams will play the second game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
