BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Atlantic hurler C.J. Williams tossed a five-hit, complete game shutout in a 5-0 blanking of visiting Tulane Friday at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Owls improved to 20-15 overall and 7-6 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Green Wave fell to 20-18 and 5-8 in the league.
Williams (5-2), who didn't allow the Wave to get into scoring position until first baseman Brady Marget doubled in the ninth, struck out five and walked two in the 111-pitch effort.
Tulane starter Luc Fladda (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Relievers Henry Shuffler and Taylor Montiel did a nice job, limiting the home team to just one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks over the final four innings.
FAU shortstop Brando Leroux had the game's biggest hit, a bases-clearing double in the third inning to give the Owls a 4-0 advantage. Second baseman Christian Adams also went 4-for-5. He and left fielder Jalen DeBose scored twice.
Marget, who is riding a 10-game hitting streak, and third baseman Gavin Schulz both had two hits.
Green Wave catcher Colin Tuft (0-for-4) saw both his on-base (29 games) and hitting streaks (21) come to an end Friday. Second baseman Connor Rasmussen walked to lead off the second inning to extend his on-base streak to 14 consecutive contests.
The two teams will play the second game of the series Saturday at 4 p.m. ET/3 CT.
