Tulane Cruises to AAC Title Game with Run-Rule Mauling of FAU
May 25, 2024 | Baseball
CLEARWATER, FL – Third-seeded Tulane's trio of third baseman Gavin Schulz, designated hitter Michael Lombardi and left fielder Jackson Linn knocked in nine runs and starter Billy Price went the distance as the Green Wave drubbed sixth-seeded Florida Atlantic 13-1 in a seven-inning, run-rule victory Saturday in the semifinals of the 2024 American Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at BayCare Ballpark.
Â
Tulane (34-24) will face fourth-seeded Wichita State (32-28) in Sunday's noon ET/11 a.m. CT title game with an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line. The game will be broadcast on ESPNews.Â
Â
The Shockers rebounded from a 5-4 loss to top-seeded East Carolina on Saturday with a 12-2 eight-inning, run-rule win of its own over the Pirates in the teams' second semifinal contest held later that evening.
Â
Schulz (two doubles, one triple), Lombardi and Linn also combined to go 5-for-10 with five runs scored. First baseman Brady Marget also had a big day with two triples and three runs scored in a 3-for-4 effort.
Â
The lone homer of the day came off Linn's bat, who launched a three-run shot to deep left in the bottom of the sixth to make the run-rule victory possible. The blast tied him for the team lead in that category with center fielder Teo Banks.
Â
Tuft stole his team-high 13th base of the season in the big first inning.
Â
The Owls only mustered a first-inning infield single RBI by Jake Millan against Price (3-2), who gave up just two hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.Â
Â
FAU starter Trey Beard (4-4) never recorded an out, giving up five runs on three hits with no strikeouts and two walks.
Â
Saturday's win was Tulane's fifth in a row at the AAC Tournament, stretching back to the final two games of the 2023 bracket. That stretch is the program's longest since 2001 when the Wave dropped the first game of the Conference USA Tournament but rallied through the losers' bracket to take the title. The last time Tulane has had a longer conference tournament streak was 1998 and 1999 when the team went unbeaten through both C-USA brackets for eighth consecutive victories.
Â
The last time anyone in the league won five straight AAC Tournament games was 2014 and 2015 by the Houston Cougars in the first two years of the league's existence. No team has ever had a longer streak in the conference's short history.
Â
Banks is now hitting 25-for-50 (.500) in his 12 career AAC Tournament contests.
Â
Price has allowed just two earned runs in his last 20 and two-thirds innings of work.
