May 5, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – The visiting Memphis baseball team used a trio of pitchers in a 3-0 shutout victory over host Tulane on Saturday evening on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Tigers limited the Green Wave to just two hits to improve to 20-27 overall and 7-13 in the American Athletic Conference. Tulane dropped to 26-21 and 10-10 in the league.
Memphis relief pitcher Luke Ellis (1-5) picked up his first win of the season, striking out four in two and a third innings, while giving up a hit and a walk. Starter Seth Garner preceded him and surrendered just one hit and two walks with two strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. Brayden Sanders nailed down his sixth save as he worked around a walk in the ninth inning.
Tulane starter Chandler Welch (5-3) pitched into the seventh inning in the defeat. He struck out five with nine hits and two walks in six and a third innings. He gave up the game's biggest hit, a two-run homer to right by Memphis catcher and leadoff hitter Brennan DuBose in the top of the seventh. The blast, DuBose's eighth of the season, broke open a scoreless tie.
The other Memphis run came on a solo homer to center by center fielder Alex Fernandes in the top of the ninth off Tulane's Carter Benbrook. Benbrook got the Olive and Blue's final seven outs, three of them by strikeout.
DuBose, Fernandes, third baseman Austin Baskin and first baseman Shane Cox had eight of the Tigers' 11 hits.
Tulane designated hitter Michael Lombardi singled in the fourth and center fielder Teo Banks blooped his team-leading 12th double of the seven in the seventh.
Banks has now reached base in 17 consecutive contests.
The rubber match will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. in Uptown.
