Baseball’s Welch Drafted In Sixth Round By Milwaukee Brewers
Jul 15, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane pitcher Chandler Welch was picked 185th overall in the sixth round by the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday afternoon on the second day of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft.
Welch, a right-hander from Slidell, Louisiana, led the Green Wave with seven victories, 89 innings pitched and 88 strikeouts in 2024.
He ended the season on a high note with wins in four of his last five appearances including a pair of victories at the AAC Tournament.
In his three years in a Tulane uniform, Welch has earned 15 victories, three saves and recorded 204 strikeouts in 199.1 innings pitched. He has appeared in 67 games with 29 starts on the mound.
He is the first Tulane baseball player to be drafted since fellow pitcher Dylan Carmouche was selected in the 15th round (450th overall) by the San Francisco Giants last season. Welch is the fourth Tulane player ever selected by the Milwaukee Brewers following pitcher Joe Tkac in 1979 (19th round), shortstop Josh Prince in 2009 (3rd round) and pitcher Emerson Gibbs in 2016 (33rd round). He is the highest Tulane draft choice since shortstop Collin Burns was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in 2021 in the sixth round (167th overall). Welch is Tulane's 15th MLB draft choice since the 2019 campaign.
Tulane's baseball team went 36-26 during the 2024 season, rolled to the team's second straight AAC Championship and earned a post-season berth to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive campaign. The program defeated Nicholls 3-0 in the regionals for the first NCAA shutout since 2005 over Rice in the Super Regionals. The victory was the first for the program in the NCAA Tournament since 2016 when the team defeated Utah by a 4-1 score.
