Baseball’s Banks Drafted In 18th Round By Washington Nationals
Jul 16, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane outfielder Teo Banks was picked 530th overall in the 18th round by the Washington Nationals on Tuesday afternoon on the third day of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft.
Banks, an outfielder from Odessa, Texas, led the team with 19 doubles while hitting .265 with 51 runs, 62 hits, two triples, 14 home runs, 51 RBIs, 127 total bases, a .543 slugging percentage, 22 walks and seven stolen bases in 2024. He was also named to the AAC All-Tournament team in his junior season.
In his three years at Tulane, Banks has a career batting average of .287 in 145 games played with 107 runs, 148 hits, 35 doubles, five triples, 34 home runs, 118 RBIs, a .572 slugging percentage, 45 walks and a .380 on-base percentage.
He is the fourth Tulane player selected in the 2024 MLB draft after pitcher Chandler Welch was taken in the sixth round (185th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers, catcher Colin Tuft was selected in the eighth round (249th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles and first baseman Brady Marget in the 16th round (486th overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays. This is the first time since 2021 (5) that Tulane has had multiple MLB draft choices and also the most draft choices for the program since that season. This season marks the 14th time in school history that the program has had four or more players selected.
Banks is the fifth Tulane player ever selected by the Washington Nationals and/or Montreal Expos following pitcher Gene Harris (1986), pitcher David Napoli (2013), shortstop Brennan Middleton (2013) and pitcher Tyler Mapes (2014). Banks is also Tulane's 18th MLB draft choice since the 2019 campaign.
Tulane's baseball team went 36-26 during the 2024 season, rolled to the team's second straight AAC Championship and earned a post-season berth to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive campaign. The program defeated Nicholls 3-0 in the regionals for the first NCAA shutout since 2005 over Rice in the Super Regionals. The victory was the first for the program in the NCAA Tournament since 2016 when the team defeated Utah by a 4-1 score.
