Baseball Fights Back For 5-3 Road Win Over Southeastern Louisiana
Feb 19, 2025 | Baseball
HAMMOND – The Tulane baseball team (4-0) kept the winning ways going with a 5-3 comeback road victory over Southeastern Louisiana (4-1) on Wednesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond Alumni Field in Hammond.
Carter Benbrook (1-0) earned the win for Tulane with two unblemished innings with three strikeouts. He and five other Tulane relievers combined for 8.2 scoreless innings. Garrett Payne was the first reliever in and settled the game down with a scoreless 1.2 innings of work with four strikeouts. Gavin Smith then entered and went 0.2 of an inning with a strikeout. Tayler Montiel entered next and threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts. Benbrook then threw his scoreless frames. Wes Burton, after missing last year with injury, made his first-ever Tulane appearance and threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Michael Lombardi closed it out with two scoreless frames with five strikeouts to earn his first save of the season. The pitching staff totaled 16 strikeouts in the game.
Lombardi also helped lead the hitters with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Kaikea Harrison drove in a pair of runs including the game winner. Connor Rasmussen totaled a pair of hits. Jackson Linn scored two runs. The team played unselfish baseball with five walks, three sacrifice hits and were hit by five pitches.
The Lions scored first with three runs in the first inning on a single, sacrifice fly and an errant pickoff attempt to first base. It marked the first time that Tulane had not scored first in the early going of the season.
Tulane answered with a run in the third inning on a Lombardi RBI ground out.
The offense exploded for three runs to take the lead in the sixth inning with the key hit being a Harrison two-RBI single up the middle.
The program added a much-needed insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice bunt from Lombardi to make the final score 5-3.
Next, Tulane returns home to host Loyola Marymount (4-1) for a weekend series from Feb. 21-23 starting with first pitch on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
