TULANE GAME NOTES
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team (4-0) puts the squad's perfect record and four-game winning streak on the line this weekend as the program welcomes in Loyola Marymount (4-1) for a three-game weekend series on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium from Feb. 21-23.

The two teams will square off Friday at 2 p.m., followed by games at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. All the games will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jack Benjamin (pxp) and Joey Brockhoff (color) on the call on Sunday. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action in the first game on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Network (Friday). Todd Graffagnini will call the second game of the series on Varsity Network (Saturday), while Paul Boron will be on the call for the third game (Sunday) on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Network. The first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday also will be simulcast to ESPN+. Airtime for radio for all three games is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Promotions
On Friday, it is a Mardi Gras Friday as a free Mardi Gras Themed Cooler will be given away to the first 250 fans, a raffle will be held to win a Tulane Mardi Gras Baseball Jersey along with the day being Friday Night Bingo.
Sunday will be the second Riptide's Kids Club Day. Kids Club members will receive free admission and there will be a giveaway of collectible Tulane Baseball cards. A postgame autograph session with Justin Bridgman, James Agabedis III, Julius Ejike-Charles, Nate Johnson and J.D. Rodriguez will also be held on the concourse behind home plate.
Pitching Matchups
The Green Wave will start senior Luc Fladda on Friday. The 6-1 lefthander went 5-3 last year in his first season as a member of the Green Wave, sporting an earned run average of 4.77 with 61 strikeouts and 21 walks in 83 innings. He yielded a .281 batting average against. He started his season going five innings and tied his career high with eight strikeouts while getting a no-decision against Omaha in the season opener.
The Lions will counter with graduate student Kenji Pallares. Pallares, a righty, started his year against Seattle with a six inning and nine strikeout performance on opening day. He allowed just three hits and two walks. Last season he appeared in 21 games out of the bullpen and struck out 26 in 16.1 frames but also surrendered 23 walks.
Tulane will start righty J.D. Rodriguez on Saturday. The junior transfer from Corona, Calif. played at Golden West College last season where he appeared in 20 games with seven starts. He won four games, had four saves and struck out 72 in 74 innings pitched. He went 2.2 innings in his start against the Mavericks last weekend with two walks, two hit by pitches and two strikeouts.
Loyola Marymount counters with senior Jacob Hughes. The 6-3 righty threw 1.2 innings in the start against Seattle last week. He surrendered four runs on four hits with a walk while striking out a pair.
On Sunday, the Green Wave will start 6-8 senior righty Trey Cehajic. Cehajic hails from Shreveport, Louisiana and is in his second year with the program. As a junior he worked exclusively out of the bullpen in his 19 appearances. He placed second on the team with four saves while totaling 15 strikeouts in 27.1 innings thrown and a 0-2 record. In his first career start last week, Cehajic earned the victory after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning while striking out four and limiting opponents to a .167 batting average against.
LMU sends Jonah Johnson to the hill in the series finale. Johnson, a righty, had a solid opening day performance with five innings worked and an unearned run allowed. He also struck out two. It was his first appearance for LMU after transferring from Chandler Gilbert Community College.
Loyola Marymount is off to a fast 4-1 start and defeated future Tulane opponent Long Beach State by a 7-4 score on Tuesday. The program went 24-30 last season including a mark of 9-15 in the West Coast Conference under current second-year head coach Donegal Fergus. Â
Colby Wallace has been the program's best hitter this season with nine hits, seven runs scored, two doubles, a triple, a home run and four RBIs. DJ Ghirso leads the clubs with his nine RBIs.
Series History
Tulane trails the all-time series with Loyola Marymount by a 2-1 count. The only previous matchup, also in New Orleans, came in 2007 for the Green Wave.
Against the West Coast Conference
Tulane is 21-21 all-time against current schools from the West Coast Conference. The program's first contest against a current WCC team came in 1978 against Santa Clara. The team's last meeting with a WCC team was against Pepperdine last season from March 15-16 and saw Tulane win two-of-three in the series. The Green Wave team will play another series against a WCC opponent next week (Feb. 28 – March 2) in Malibu against Pepperdine.
Last Time Out
After falling behind 3-0 against Southeastern Louisiana on the road in Hammond on Feb. 19, Tulane fought all the way back to earn the 5-3 victory.
Carter Benbrook (1-0) earned the win for Tulane with two unblemished innings with three strikeouts. He and five other Tulane relievers combined for 8.2 scoreless innings. Garrett Payne was the first reliever in and settled the game down with a scoreless 1.2 innings of work with four strikeouts. Gavin Smith then entered and went 0.2 of an inning with a strikeout. Tayler Montiel entered next and threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts. Benbrook then threw his scoreless frames. Wes Burton, after missing last year with injury, made his first-ever Tulane appearance and threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Michael Lombardi closed it out with two scoreless frames with five strikeouts to earn his first save of the season. The pitching staff totaled 16 strikeouts in the game.
Lombardi also helped lead the hitters with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Kaikea Harrison drove in a pair of runs including the game winner. Connor Rasmussen totaled a pair of hits. Jackson Linn scored two runs. The team played unselfish baseball with five walks and three sacrifice hits.
Notables From SLU
Tulane is off to the first 4-0 start for the program since the 2022 season. The win over Southeastern improved Tulane to 82-41 all-time against the Lions. The program is also now 304-162 all-time against current schools in the Southland Conference. The team's 16 strikeouts recorded were the most the program had in a game since also getting 16 batters against Southeastern Louisiana last season (3/12/24). Earlier last season, Tulane also struck out 16 against Northwestern in the season opener (2/16/24). The team last topped 16 strikeouts on the mound in 2023 when the staff fanned 19 against Penn (3/10/23). Wes Burton made his Tulane debut against Southeastern after an injury kept him out for 645 days (441 since he had Tommy John surgery).
Next
After the weekend, the Green Wave play on the road for the next five games. The team starts the extended road trip with a midweek contest against Nicholls on Feb. 25 starting at 6:30 p.m. The program then heads to the West Coast to take on Pepperdine for a three-game series from Feb. 28 – March 2 and then has a single contest against Long Beach State on March 3.
