Late Surge Fuels Comeback Win for Wave Over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Ten unanswered points in the final two minutes by Tulane men's basketball (13-10, 7-3) completed the 61-60 come from behind victory on the road over UTSA (10-12, 4-6) on Wednesday night. Redshirt sophomore Rowan Brumbaugh sank two free throws with 2.5 seconds left to put the Green Wave on top for its second-straight win.
With the win, Tulane swept the regular season series against the Roadrunners and improved to 6-1 all-time against UTSA. The victory was also the second consecutive conference road with for the Wave moving the team to 3-2 on the road in league play.
Despite a slow offensive night, the Green Wave continued to play strong defense holding UTSA to 32.8 percent shooting from the field and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc. By limiting the Roadrunners to 60 points, Tulane has held its opponents to 60 points or less in seven games this season including each of the last two contests.
The charity stripe proved to be a difference maker between the Wave and the Roadrunners. Tulane shot 85.7 percent (18-21) from the free throw line while UTSA connected at just 63.6 percent (14-22) from the line.
Asher Woods and Brumbaugh finished as the only players to tally double figures for the Green Wave. Woods led the way with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field including a pair of three-pointers.
Brumbaugh scored all 13 of his points in the second half including shooting a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line while adding four rebounds and four assists. With his performance against the Roadrunners the redshirt sophomore guard has recorded double-digit points in 19 consecutive games.
After a couple minutes of back-and-forth action to open the contest, UTSA took control of the lead with a 7-0 run with 13:22 on the clock. The deficit for the Wave reached as many as 15 points late in the first, but Tulane closed the frame with the last seven points to hit the locker room trailing 25-33.
The Roadrunners pushed their advantage back to double figures early in the second half before the Green Wave made its first run of the half with seven unanswered points to pull the score to 35-39 with 15:10 to play. However, UTSA mounted a response of its own to build a 10-point advantage with 3:11 remaining.
Tulane did not back down in the final minutes outscoring the Roadrunners 12-1 to close the contest. Kaleb Banks pulled the Wave within one point with a corner three with 41 seconds left.
After a Tulane timeout, the Wave locked in defensively one last time to force a shot clock violation by the Roadrunners and reclaim possession with 9.9 seconds to play. Brumbaugh drove the lane on the following possession to draw a foul on UTSA and step to the free throw line with a chance to put Tulane in front with 2.5 seconds on the clock. With ice in his veins, Brumbaugh sank both free throws to complete the comeback and secure the 61-60 victory for the Green Wave.
Up next, the Tulane will make the trip to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas on Saturday, February 8. The game between the Wave and the Mean Green is set to tipoff at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
