TULANE GAME NOTES
New Orleans, LA - The Tulane baseball team (17-7) heads across town to take on UNO (12-10) on Tuesday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field. The game will be the first contest of this year's Pelican Cup series after the postponement of the Feb. 18 matchup.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Network. Airtime for radio is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Pitching Matchups
Tulane hasn't officially named the team's starter for what will be a bullpen game.
UNO's expected starter is left-handed pitcher Hayden O'Dell. O'Dell is making his third start of the season. He has thrown 7.2 innings with eight walks and six strikeouts on the campaign.
Scouting UNO
UNO (12-10) have won five of the team's last eight games after falling to Northwestern State twice over the weekend in a pair of one-run games. Collin Loupe is hitting .390 with 23 hits, two home runs and 13 RBIs. Bryce Calloway sports a robust .378 batting average with 26 runs scored, 34 hits, nine home runs, 28 RBIs and 65 total bases. His nine home runs are second in the Southland Conference and 22nd nationally. Bryan Loriga is hitting .372 with 32 hits, 10 doubles, two home runs and 19 RBIs. Sawyer Toney has been the team's best reliever with a 2.13 ERA along with 12 strikeouts in 12.2 innings pitched. Grant Edwards has been the top starter with 43 strikeouts in 31 innings worked.
In 2024, UNO had a record of 31-26 and 14-10 in the Southland Conference. The program is under new leadership this season, as Dax Norris was named the head coach of the program in December.
Pelican Cup
The Pelican Cup was brought back in 2018. After a two-year hiatus in 2020 and 2021, it returned again in 2022. The Green Wave are the current holders of the cup after going 2-1 last season. The Privateers have captured the cup three times (2018, 2019 and 2023) while Tulane has been the winner of the cup twice (2022 and 2024).
Series History
This will be the 160th all-time meeting between the crosstown rivals on the diamond in a series that started in 1971. Tulane leads the all-time series 87-72. The Green Wave went 2-1 against the Privateers last season to earn the Pelican Cup title.
Last Time Out
The Tulane baseball team (17-7, 2-1 AAC) took the rubber game of the team's opening conference series over Wichita State (8-15, 1-2 AAC) by an 11-5 score on Sunday, March 23, on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Michael Lombardi was the story of the game as he went 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs and also pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn his seventh save of the season. Connor Rasmussen and Jason Wachs also had two hits each plus each scored a pair of runs. Andrew McKenna had a pair of RBIs plus scored a run. Gavin Schulz, James Agabedis III, Tanner Chun and Kaikea Harrison all had a hit and RBI. The team had a season-high four home runs in the game in pounding out 12 hits.
Carter Benbrook started and went the first 2.1 innings. He allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout and a walk. Garrett Payne threw two thirds of an inning with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Gavin Smith threw a scoreless inning. Julius Ejike-Charles (1-0) had a scoreless frame with a strikeout and a walk. Henry Shuffler was able to retire one but also hit a batter in his 0.1 innings worked. John Paul-Sauer walked the only man he faced in the sixth. Grayson Smith threw 0.2 innings with two runs allowed. Blaise Wilcenski went 0.2 and totaled a strikeout. Jacob Moore surrendered a run with two strikeouts in his inning. Lombardi had a walk and two strikeouts getting the last out in the eighth and the final three in the ninth to secure the victory.
Lombardi Named to AAC Honor Roll – Week 6
Michael Lombardi was named to the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll for the third straight week on Monday.
Lombardi aided Tulane to a conference series victory over Wichita State over the weekend. The team now has won all five of the team's weekend series at home. He played a pivotal role for the team both on the mound and at the plate. He picked up multi-inning saves in the victories on Saturday and Sunday. He threw a combined 3.0 innings in the series and recorded six strikeouts without allowing a hit and surrendering just two walks with two saves. On Saturday he threw 1.2 innings and struck out four to earn the save in Tulane's dramatic 8-6 victory. On Sunday he again was called upon to protect a late lead and delivered with 1.1 scoreless frames with two strikeouts to earn his seventh save of the season. His seven saves this year gives him 12 career saves to move him into a tie for eighth place all-time at the school. At the plate he also did damage with a .333 batting average, three runs, four hits, two home runs and six RBIs for 10 total bases, a slugging percentage of .833 plus two sacrifice flies.
Notables from the Wichita State Series
Connor Rasmussen with two hits in the final game against Wichita State (3/23) extended his on-base percentage to 22 games. Michael Lombardi with seven saves this season now has 12 in career and is tied with Christian Colletti (2016-17), DJ Ponder (2009-12) and Juan Ibieta (1990-93) for eighth all-time at the school. Lombardi's five RBIs in the Sunday game (3/23) were a career high. Tulane's four home runs on Sunday (3/23) were the most for the program in a game this season and the most since hitting five against the Shockers in the AAC Conference Tournament last season (5/26/24). With 15 strikeouts against the Shockers on Saturday (3/22) and then 10 more strikeouts against Wichita on Sunday (3/23), the Tulane pitching staff has reached double figure in strikeouts in 15 of the team's 24 games this season. All of last year (62 games), Tulane had 15 games where the pitching staff reached double digits in strikeouts

Following the midweek game against UNO, Tulane travels and plays the first conference road series with a trip to Tampa to take on South Florida (13-9, 2-1 AAC) from March 28 – 30. The team starts the following week on the road as well with a trip to take on Southern Miss on April 1.
