NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team (17-8) lost a closely contested 7-6 game in this season's first matchup of the Pelican Cup to UNO (13-10) on Tuesday, March 25, on Maestri Field at Privateer Park.
The game was ultimately decided in the ninth inning as the Green Wave had the tying run on third with two out only to see UNO's closer Bryce Calloway get a ground out to end the game and give the first game of the Pelican Cup to the Privateers.

Gavin Smith was the next reliever in for Tulane and gave up a pair of runs. Wes Burton sparkled for the Green Wave out of the bullpen in going three full innings with seven strikeouts. Julius Ejike-Charles continued the trend with a strikeout in a scoreless eighth.
Hayden O'Dell started for New Orleans and went 4.1 innings with three runs allowed. Canaan Clayton allowed three runs in his 0.1 innings worked. Ira Austin (2-0) settled the game with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts. Calloway pitched the final 0.2 for his sixth save of the season.
Connor Rasmussen and Jason Wachs led the Tulane offense with two hits. Gavin Schulz had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored. Tanner Chun had a home run and four RBIs. Nate Johnson and Kaikea Harrison each had a hit while Harrison also knocked in a run.
UNO scored a pair in the opening inning as Tristan Moore doubled to plate Alexander Saunier and Calloway.
Tulane answered in the second with a run as Harrison pushed a single up the middle to score Schulz.
The Privateers put up a three-spot in the third inning on Bryan Loriga's two-run home run followed by Calloway's blast to increase the lead to 5-1.
UNO added two more runs to the advantage, 7-1, in the fourth inning on Loriga's second two-run home run of the game.
Tulane nearly climbed all the way back and scored five in the fifth on a bases loaded walk from Schulz and a grand slam by Chun to get to within a run, 7-6, in what would ultimately be the final score.
