
Baseball Falls 13-6 to No. 16 Southern Miss

Blaise Wilcenski (3-2) started for Tulane and surrendered six runs in 0.2 innings with two strikeouts. Will Clements was the first arm out of the pen for Tulane and he went 2.1 with two runs allowed and two strikeouts. Tayler Montiel entered the game next on the mound in the fourth inning. He surrendered a run in the 0.2 worked with a strikeout. Julius Ejike-Charles was the next man up for Tulane. He allowed two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings worked. Ejike-Charles was then relieved by Michael Devenney. Devenney allowed two runs on three hits in two innings worked. Henry Shuffler threw a scoreless eighth to finish things out for the Green Wave.
USM's Matthew Adams started and went the first four innings with eight strikeouts and three runs allowed. The win was earned by Brooks Willoughby (3-0). Willoughby had a 1.2 scoreless inning outing.
Jason Wachs led the offense attack for Tulane with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Matthias Haas picked up two hits and an RBI. Hugh Pinkney recorded three hits to go along with an RBI. Michael Lombardi also had multiple hits. The team's other hits came from Tanner Chun, Kaikea Harrison and Connor Rasmussen. Gavin Schulz scored two runs. Theo Bryant IV, Pinkney, Chun and Harrison all scored a run.
Tulane found themselves down early, 8-0, as USM's Nick Moniestere hit a two-run run home run, followed by a three-run blast from Ozzie Pratt, a run-scoring single from Jake Cook and then a two-run triple from Montiestere in the bottom of the first inning.
Tulane broke through for three runs in the fourth inning on a Wachs two-run double and an RBI infield hit from Haas.
USM answered with a run in bottom of the frame on a bases loaded walk by Pratt.
Tulane scored two in the fifth on a RBI single from Chun and an RBI hit by pitch by Wachs to draw to within four, 9-5.
Again in the bottom of the frame the Golden Eagles answered with two scores of their own on the sacrifice fly from Montiestere and the RBI double from Matthew Russo to again go up seven, 11-5.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs to the advantage in the seventh, 13-5, on the solo home run from Davis Gillespie and the bloop single from Pratt. Â
Hugh Pinkney knocked in a run for Tulane in the eighth inning with a base hit to center to make the final score, 13-6.
Next, the team returns home for a nine-game homestand starting against Northwestern State on Wednesday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. The program gets back into league play and welcomes in Rice for a three-game set starting on Friday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m.

Tulane's current five-game losing streak is the longest skid of the season…The last time that program lost five or more consecutive games was from March 24-30 of last season when the team fell to Rice (1), Southern Miss (1) and UTSA (3)…This was the first game that Tulane has faced off with a ranked team this season…The loss was the Green Wave's seventh straight to Southern Miss as the last win over the Golden Eagles came during the 2018 campaign…Hugh Pinkney's three hits were a Tulane career-high and his second multi-hit performance.
