TULANE GAME NOTES
New Orleans, LA - The Tulane baseball team (17-11, 2-4 AAC) begins the month of April with a five-game week. The program both travels to a midweek and hosts a midweek before getting back into conference play. The program starts the week heading to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on No. 16 (Coaches) Southern Miss (20-8) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, at Pete Taylor Park. Â The team then turns around and plays against Northwestern State (18-9) on Wednesday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. back at home on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Both games will be streamed on ESPN+. Paul Boron, the voice of the Tulane women's basketball team, will call the action on Tuesday and Wednesday on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Sports. Airtime for radio for both games is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Pitching Matchups
Tulane is expected to start RHP Blaise Wilcenski on Tuesday. The team hasn't officially announced the starter on Wednesday as it will be determined following the Tuesday game
The game starter on the mound for Southern Miss (Tuesday) is expected to be RHP Matt Adams while Northwestern State (Wednesday) also hasn't been officially announced.
Scouting Southern Miss
Southern Miss (20-8, 7-2 Sun Belt) are currently ranked among the top 25 programs in the country in four polls. The program checks in at No. 16 in the Coaches Poll, No. 13 in D1 Baseball, No. 16 in NCBWA and No. 24 in Baseball America. USM has won 11 of the last 14 games after earning the series victory against South Alabama over the weekend.
Jake Cook is leading the attack with his .387 batting average and 36 hits. He is also slugging .495 with six doubles and two triples. Tucker Stockman sports a .347 batting average with 25 hits including three doubles and two home runs. Carson Paetow leads the club with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs. Matthew Russo has nine home runs and 25 RBIs. Grayden Harris has been the top pitcher with a 1.75 ERA. JB Middleton leads the club with his 5-1 record to go along with 50 strikeouts in 41 innings worked. Colby Allen has been the best relief pitcher with his 2.73 ERA, 3-2 record, six saves, 37 strikeouts in 34 innings worked. Christian Ostrander is in his second year in charge of the program and is 63-28 since he took over.
Series History
Tulane leads the all-time series with Southern Miss 100-67-1 since the first meeting in 1949. The last meeting was last season and saw the Golden Eagles earn an 11-6 victory in April. USM has won the last six contests against the Green Wave.
Against the Sun Belt Conference
The road game Southern Miss will be the first for the program against a Sun Belt opponent since last year when the Green Wave lost to the Golden Eagles 11-6. The program faced off with a pair of Sun Belt opponents last season in also losing two of three games to Louisiana on the road. The first meeting against a current Sun Belt Conference opponent came in 1946 with a Tulane falling 7-1 to Louisiana. Overall, the Green Wave are 203-158 against current Sun Belt Conference opponents. The 100 wins against Southern Miss is the most for the program against any school in the conference and the second-most against any opponent overall (131 vs. LSU).
Scouting Northwestern State
The Demons are 18-9 overall with a 10-5 record in the Southland Conference after sweeping Nicholls over the weekend.
Reese Lipoma leads the club with his .333 batting average and 35 runs. He is tied for the team lead with 32 hits. Rocco Gump has 32 hits, 30 runs scored, 28 walks, six double, four triples, four home runs and 31 RBIs plus 15 stolen bases. Samuel Stephenson is hitting .307 with 32 runs scored, 21 walks, eight doubles and 24 RBIs. He also has 11 stolen bases. The other stolen base threat this season has been Balin Valentine who has 13. Dylan Marionneaux has been the team's best starter with a 3-2 record plus 36 strikeout in 35 innings pitched plus a 2.57 ERA. Carter White is 1-1 on the campaign with 18 strikeouts in 21.1 innings worked. Kevin Robinson is 5-0 this season in five starts and only 16 innings pitched.
The Demons are coached by Chris Bertrand. Bertrand is in his second year running the program and ninth overall campaign as a member on staff at Northwestern State.
Series History
Tulane is 19-4 all-time against Northwestern State since the start of the series in 1983 when the Green Wave earned an 11-5 victory. The two schools haven't faced each other since 2013 when a brief two-game series in New Orleans was split (W, 3-0 & L, 5-1)
Against the Southland Conference
The home game against Northwestern State is the sixth of nine games against the Southland Conference opponents this season for Tulane. The program defeated Southeastern Louisiana 5-3 on Feb. 19 in Hammond, Nicholls 13-3 on Feb. 25 in Thibodeaux, Nicholls again by a 9-5 score on March 11 in New Orleans and lost to Lamar 14-4 on March 18 in New Orleans and UNO on March 25 across town to fall to 306-164 all-time against current schools in the SLC.
Last Time Out
The Tulane baseball team (17-11, 2-4 AAC) lost the team's fourth straight game and were swept in the conference series with a 10-3 road loss to South Florida (16-9, 5-1 AAC) on Sunday morning, March 30, at USF Baseball Stadium.
Carter Benbrook started for the Green Wave and surrendered two runs on two hits with two walks in a pair of innings. Wes Burton (0-1) was the first reliever out of the pen for Tulane. He walked three and allowed a run with a strikeout in an inning. Julius Ejike-Charles was next out of the pen for the Wave. He surrendered three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Gavin Smith then entered in the contest. He retired one with a walk, a hit and two runs. Jacob Moore was the team's third pitcher in the fifth inning. He gave up a run without being able to record an out. Garrett Payne then entered to relieve Moore to finish out the fifth. Payne ended up throwing a 2.1 innings and surrendered a run with three strikeouts. Michael Lombardi worked the final inning for Tulane and retired the side in order with a strikeout.
The team's five hits in the game came from Connor Rasmussen, Matthias Haas, Jason Wachs, Lombardi, Tanner Chun, Gavin Schulz and William Good. The runs were driven in by Chun, Wachs and Good.
Notables from the South Florida Series
Tulane's current four-game losing streak in the longest skid of the season. Matthias Haas's double in the first inning of the third game (3/30) was Tulane's first extra base hit of the series. The home run from William Good in the ninth inning of the third game (3/30) was his first career hit. Tulane is now 43-33 all-time against South Florida and have lost the last three games against the Bulls dating back to last season. The Green Wave haven't won a series against South Florida in Tampa since the 2016 season. The series was the first time that Tulane has been swept by USF since 1993 and the first time ever in Tampa. The earned run allowed by Tayler Montiel in the second game (3/29) was the first time he has surrendered an earned run this season in now 12 appearances and 17.1 innings worked. Jackson Linn's three RBIs on Saturday in the second game (3/29) was his second multi-RBI performance of the season. The first game 3-0 loss to USF (3/28) was the first time that Tulane has been shutout this season and the first time since also being unable to score against Memphis last season in a 3-0 defeat (5/4/24). Connor Rasmussen saw his 23-game on-base streak stopped in the first game against the Bulls (3/28).

Following the two midweeks, Tulane welcomes in Rice (6-23, 1-5 AAC) from April 4-6 for the next conference series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The game times on Saturday, April 5, is 6:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, April 6.
