Tulane Falls on the Road at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. โ Tulane volleyball had its five-match winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon when it suffered a 3-1 defeat at South Alabama in the Jaguar Invitational. The Green Wave tried to battle back against the Jaguars after dropping the first two sets but unfortunately could not complete a comeback to keep its winning streak alive.
With the loss, the Wave dropped to 2-3 this season away from home including a 1-1 performance in the Jaguar Invitational. Tulane also suffered its second consecutive loss to South Alabama to drop to 25-7 all-time in the series.
Offensively for the Green Wave, Avery Burks paced the team with 17 kills which led all players in the match. The duo of Zoe Rachow and freshman Lily Wedman set the table for the Tulane offense recording 29 and 10 assists, respectively.
Wedman and Dayla Ortiz held down the defense for the Green Wave each tallying double-digit digs. The freshman led the way with 11 digs while Ortiz added 10. Sabrina Skyers patrolled the net for the Tulane defense as she recorded six total blocks.
Tulane got out to a solid start in the match holding the advantage for the majority of the first set. Eventually a 3-0 run for the Wave put Tulane up 22-19 in the opening set, but the Jaguars did not go away outlasting the Green Wave to take the first point 28-26.
Momentum stayed with South Alabama in the second set as the Green Wave faced an uphill battle dropping the set 25-17.
Tulane refused to roll over as the match entered the third set. The Wave mounted an 8-2 scoring run to claim control in the set before holding on to force a fourth set with a 25-21 win.
In the fourth set the score went back and forth between the Green Wave and the Jaguars before reaching an 11-11 tie. The rest of the set favored South Alabama as Tulane went on to ultimately lose 25-22 and drop the match 3-1.
UP NEXT
Tulane will return home to host the Pelican Invitational alongside the University of New Orleans. In the three-day tournament The Green Wave will face New Orleans, Providence, and Alabama State. Competition for the Pelican Invitational will run from September 18-20.
