Green Wave Rolls Over New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS โ Tulane volleyball returned to its winning ways at home on Thursday night as it swept past cross-town foe New Orleans 3-0 to open play in the Pelican Invitational. The Green Wave has moved to a perfect 4-0 so far this season in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse with three of those victories coming as a sweep.
With the win, the Wave improved to 6-3 this season with four victories over fellow Bayou State opponents. Thursday's victory also marked Tulane's 11th consecutive win over the Privateers to move to 66-23 all-time in the series.
Against the Privateers the Green Wave attack was led by graduate transfer Fatima Samb. The Ponta Vedra, Florida, native posted her best performance yet in a Tulane uniform tallying 10 kills on a .667 hitting percentage and adding six total blocks.
Following the performance by Samb for the Wave offensively were Avery Burks and Ava Derbes each finishing with eight kills. Zoe Rachow set the table for the Tulane offense leading all players 32 assists.
Samb and Derbes led the defense at the net for the Green Wave as Derbes registered five total blocks to follow the six by Samb. Dayla Ortiz was the anchor defensively leading all players in the match with 18 digs.
Following a brief back-and-forth in the opening set Tulane took control of the match against UNO with a 6-0 run to take an early 13-6 advantage. The Wave extended its lead to as many as 10 points in the set before cruising to a 25-16 win to claim a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The second set started in a similar fashion to the first until the Green Wave used a 5-0 to pull in front of UNO 13-8. Tulane pushed its lead out to seven points, but this time the Privateers go down without a fight. The Wave's advantage was trimmed to three multiple times in the final stretch of the set, but Burks delivered a kill to finish the set in favor of Tulane 25-21.
Tulane kept its momentum rolling into the third set by jumping out to an 8-2 lead before UNO was forced to call a timeout. The Green Wave never let the Privateers gain any traction to battle back going on to win the set 25-20 and secure the sweep 3-0.

The Wave will host Providence on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in its second match of the Pelican Invitational.
