NEW ORLEANS โ Tulane volleyball outlasted Providence in a hard-fought battle in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse winning 3-1 Friday night to remain unbeaten in Uptown. Junior Avery Burks carried the offensive attack as she tallied 23 kills to mark fourth match so far this season with at least 20 kills.
With the win, the Wave improved to 7-3 this season including 5-0 at home. The victory also marked Tulane's second win over the Friars in program history.
Burks put on an offensive clinic to lead the way for the Green Wave recording 24.0 total points on a match-high 23 kills and one total block. She was joined in the offensive attack by Lauryn Mack with 12 kills and Ava Derbes with 11 kills.
Zoe Rachow continued to show her prowess in setting up her teammates as she finished with 44 assists in the match marking her third career performance with at least 40 assists and her second this season. The junior also added 18 digs, three kills, and a block.
Defensively, four players registered double figures in digs led by Dayla Ortiz with 19. Rachow followed her while Annabelle He and Burks added 19 and 10, respectively.
Tulane claimed the early advantage in the opening set and did not let the Friars battle back. The Wave built its lead to as many as eight points before winning the first set convincingly 25-18.
Despite an initial lead by the Green Wave again in the second set Providence did not let the momentum get away from them. Tulane held a 10-8 advantage until the Friars scored three straight to take their first lead of the set. The Wave pulled the score back to a tie twice but was never able to retake the lead ultimately dropping the second set 25-20.
The third set turned into a bit of a marathon for the two teams as Tulane fought back from an 18-13 deficit to tie the score at 20-20. From that moment the Green Wave and the Friars exchanged the lead four times with Tulane eventually coming out on top thanks to a service ace by He and a block from Maddy McLin to clinch the set 30-28.
Tulane rode the momentum from the wild third set to jump on Providence in the fourth climbing to a 13-7 advantage. The Wave pushed its lead out to as many as 10 points in the set before securing a 25-17 win to claim the match 3-1.
