Tulane Secures Comeback 73-68 Victory Over UAB
Jan 17, 2026 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Behind a fourth-quarter surge and a late three by Mecailin Marshall, the Tulane women's basketball team overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to best UAB in a back-and-forth slugfest Saturday afternoon at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave improves to 8-10 (3-3 American) as the Blazers fall to 7-11 (0-6 American).
Both offenses were electric in the contest with UAB outshooting Tulane by a slim margin, 44.8 percent to 41.3 percent. Both teams made one-third of their respective three-point tries, with the Blazers going 10-of-30 and Tulane 6-of-18. The glass and paint proved to be the deciding factors for the Wave, who won the boards 42-30 with a 14-6 advantage on the offensive glass. This led to 17 second chance points for Tulane, besting UAB's total of four. Tulane proved to be the tougher team, holding a 38-22 lead in paint points and drawing more fouls, 18-11. The Wave converted those subsequent foul shots at a 75.0 percent clip (15-of-20). Tulane protected the ball well, turning it over just 12 times, a new season low.
The contest was a nip-and-tuck affair the whole way. Neither team led by more than six points at a given time in a match-up that featured 18 lead changes and eight ties. The fourth quarter was pivotal for Tulane as the Wave outscored the Blazers 16-10 in the final frame. The victory is Tulane's first on the season when trailing after three quarters (previously 0-8).
It was a balanced effort today with five Tulane players scoring in double figures, matching the season high. Amira Mabry led the way with 13 points, adding six rebounds and a trio of helpers. Dyllan Hanna tallied 12 points and 10 boards for her first double-double of the season, second career. Those 10 rebounds topped the squad. Jayda Brown recorded 11 points, and Kanija Daniel and Shiloh Kimpson each had 10 points. Daniel tied her career best with seven rebounds, and Kimpson led the team with a career-high five assists. Kendall Sneed was just short of becoming the sixth player in double figures, netting nine points while adding six rebounds and three assists.
Tulane opened the game emphatically with a three-point play by Amira Mabry. The first five points belonged to the Wave before UAB got on the board. The Blazers chipped away to take their first lead, 9-8, at the 6:21 mark. The lead would see-saw the rest of the quarter as the teams exchanged scores with Jordyn Weaver's free throws closing the frame to push Tulane back in front at 18-17.
Dyllan Hanna opened the second quarter with a layup, and she sandwiched a UAB score with another inside bucket. The Blazers hit a groove to pull back in front before Kanija Daniel scored. However, UAB hit a three and followed a Jayda Brown tip-in with another trey. UAB remained hot from deep with another three later to pull ahead 35-31, but Shiloh Kimpson poured in her first-career three-ball to bring Tulane within a point. However, one more three for UAB gave way to a layup, but Brown and Daniel ended the half with back-to-back buckets to bring Tulane within two points, 40-38, at the break.
The second half began with a Hanna score that tied the contest, but UAB responded. Mabry put home a triple as the teams continued to trade blows. A Kimpson three later was followed by a Mabry inside score to bring Tulane to 50 points and a four-point edge. However, UAB again connected beyond the arc. After the Blazers pulled in front 56-52 with just over a minute to go, Mecailin Marshall popped a corner three before the teams exchanged layups as the Wave trailed by one, 58-57, entering the final frame.
After an early three for UAB, Hanna delivered a put-back before Daniel scored a layup to push Tulane in front 62-61 with 6:48 on the clock. A Sneed layup and UAB free throw tied the contest at 64-all with 5:09 on the clock, and both defenses put on the clamps as the game went scoreless until the 2:27 mark when the Blazers put home a layup. Another layup pushed UAB ahead 68-64 with 1:41 to go. Tulane broke its spell with a pair of Hanna free throws at the 1:22 mark, and Marshall put home a clutch three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining to lift Tulane ahead 69-68. After a UAB timeout, Sneed came up with a key steal as the Blazers began to foul off the turnover. Sneed converted both at the line as the Wave closed out the contest from there at the charity stripe en route to a comeback 73-68 triumph over the Blazers.
Now owning back-to-back wins for the first time this season, Tulane will get a bye during the midweek portion of American Conference play next week. The Green Wave returns to the court in exactly one week, traveling to Houston, Texas, for a match-up with the conference leader Rice. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. with the game streaming on ESPN+.
