
Baseball Wins Home Opener 7-3 Over Harvard

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team (3-2) struck out 14 in earning a 7-3 home opening victory over Harvard (0-1) on Friday, Feb. 20, on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Sam Larson (1-0) earned the relief victory after throwing 2.2 scoreless frames with just a hit and two walks allowed while totaling six strikeouts. Trey Cehajic started for Tulane and went the first three innings with four strikeouts, but he also surrendered five hits, three walks and two runs. Jack Brafa was the first reliever out of the bullpen. He threw 1.2 innings with one run allowed and two strikeouts. Jude Abbadessa threw the final 1.2 innings for the Green Wave with a pair of strikeouts.
Jason Wachs led the offensive attack with a pair of hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Matthias Haas also had a pair of hits and an RBI. Nolan Nawrocki picked up a hit and an RBI. Hugh Pinkney tallied an RBI and a hit. Trent Liolios had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Tanner Chun totaled a run scored and a hit plus a walk. Kaikea Harrison picked up a hit, a run scored and a walk.
The loss was taken by Harvard's Gio Colasante (0-1). Colasante allowed five runs (four earned) in four innings.
The Green Wave scored two in the opening inning as Harrison scored on a throwing error off the single from Wachs. Wachs then came in to score on a double from Nawrocki.
In the bottom of the second, Wachs drove in a tally with a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 3-0.
Harvard drew to within a run, 3-2, in the third on an RBI infield single from Gavin Smith and a soft RBI single to right field by Jordan Kang.
The Green Wave quickly got the two runs back in the bottom of the frame, 5-2, on a Liolios double and a single from Haas.
Ryan Mooney's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning again brought the Crimson a run closer, 5-3.
Tulane added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a Wachs base hit to score Wood and a looping base hit by Pinkney to score Wachs.
Next, Tulane plays the second game of the series against Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 21, starting at 1 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium
