Baseball Fights Back for 11-9 Victory Over Harvard

NEW ORLEANS– Following an early 6-0 deficit, the Tulane baseball team (4-2) fought all the way back with nine runs over the final three innings for an 11-9 victory over Harvard (0-2) on Saturday, Feb. 21, on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Aiden Rath (1-0) earned the victory with a scoreless seventh inning. He was brought in with the team trailing 8-6 with a runner on second and nobody out and was able to escape the frame unscored upon before the offense took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Tom Vincent picked up his first save of the season throwing the final two frames while surrendering a run and a hit and totaling a strikeout. He was the last of seven pitchers used by Tulane in the game following Beau Sampson, JD Rodriguez, Blaise Wilcenski, Jake Toporek and Michael Devenney. The staff had to pitch around 24 total base runners (14 hits, eight walks and two hit batters) for Harvard.

Tanner Chun lead the offensive attack for the Green Wave with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Jason Wachs also had a multi-hit performance with a pair of hits plus two RBIs. Nolan Nawrocki scored three runs. Matthias Haas knocked in a pair of runs. Kaikea Harrison and Tye Wood both scored a pair of runs. Johnny Elliott had a hit and a run scored.

The loss was taken by Harvard's Brian Dowling (0-1). Dowling allowed four runs in 0.1 of an inning.

Tulane allowed two runs in the first and four more tallies in the second before getting a pair of runs back in the bottom of the frame on a Chun single. He later scored in the frame on a balk.

After Harvard extended the advantage to 8-2 with single runs in the fourth and the sixth inning, the Green Wave climbed back into the game in the bottom of the frame on a Wachs RBI single, a Nawrocki RBI fielder's choice, and back-to-back RBI doubles from Chun and Haas RBI.

The Green Wave took the lead, 10-8, with another four runs in the seventh inning on a Wachs RBI single, a Liolios bases loaded hit-by-pitch, a Chun bases loaded walk and a fielder's choice ground out by Haas.

In the top of the eighth, the Crimson made it a one-run game on Ryan Mooney's RBI single.

Tulane picked up a huge insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Wood to put the final margin at 11-9.

Next, Tulane plays the final game of the series against Harvard on Sunday, Feb. 22, starting at 12 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium
