Baseball Loses 16-6 Series Opener to South Florida

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team (23-28, 8-14 American) lost the series opener to South Florida (30-19, 9-13 American)16-6 on Friday, May 8, on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The loss was the fifth straight for the program.

J.D. Rodriguez (5-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs in four innings with five strikeouts. Blaise Wilcenski allowed an unearned run in his two innings with three strikeouts. Tom Vincent surrendered five runs in his 1.1 work out of the bullpen with three strikeouts. Michael Devenney allowed four runs (three earned) in his 1.1 of an inning. Max Mazinter threw the final 0.2 innings to finish out the game.

Trent Liolios and Matthias Haas helped lead the offense with two hits each. Liolios had three RBIs including his third home run of the season. Haas also scored and drove in a pair of runs with third home run of the season. Jason Wachs had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI. Tye Wood walked twice. Tanner Chun reached base safely walk. Hugh Pinkney, Nate Johnson, Brett Rowell, Jack Johnson, and Kaikea Harrison all picked up a hit.

Edwin Alicea (6-4) threw four scoreless with five strikeouts to earn his sixth win of the season.

Tulane scored first with three runs in the opening frame on the three-run home run from Liolios.

South Florida tied the game on the three-run home run from Nathan Earley in the fourth inning.

USF took the team's first lead of the day, 7-3, in the fifth on the two-run double from Javin Relaford followed by an RBI single from Earley and a wild pitch that scored Earley from third.

Tulane scored three runs in the bottom of the frame, 7-6, on a Wachs single through the right side to plate Wood followed by a two-run home run from Haas.

South Florida added three runs to their advantage in the seventh, 10-6, on a Bradke Lohry two-run double and an RBI single from Ryan Pruitt.

The Bulls added another two more runs to their lead in the eighth inning, 12-6, on Earley's single to the gap in right center. It was his fifth RBI of the night. Matt Rose followed with a pinch-hit RBI single

South Florida scored the team's final four runs of the game on a throwing error from the Tulane catcher off a stolen base followed by a fielding error from the right fielder to allow two runs to score that led to a single by Jackson Mirza.

Next, Tulane plays the second game of the series Saturday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
