Baseball Earns Key 9-8 Victory Over South Florida
May 9, 2026 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS  – The Tulane baseball team (24-28, 9-14 American) took the second game of the team's series with a thrilling 9-8 victory over visiting South Florida (30-19, 9-14 American) on Saturday, May 9, on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The win snapped the team's five game skid and even the critical conference series with the Bulls at 1-1.
Tulane scored three runs in the eighth inning to take the late advantage and then needed to withstand a South Florida two-run comeback in the ninth to earn the victory.
In the eighth inning with the game tied at six, Nate Johnson started the rally by getting hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a James Agabedis sacrifice bunt. After a ground out moved him to third but cost the team a second out, Johnson scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Tanner Chun and Tye Wood then drew back-to-back walks and scored on a Jason Wachs single through the right side to give the Green Wave a three-run lead.
In the top of the ninth, a single and a walk immediately put Tulane in some trouble and forced a pitching change to Trey Cehajic. Cehajic, who had entered on a 3-0 count, walked the first man and then induced a potential double play grounder that was mishandled at second to score the first USF run of the frame and narrow the lead to 9-7. A pop out to second followed for the first out. A ground out to first scored USF's second run of the inning and put the lead at a precarious one, 9-8, plus allowed the potential tying run to race for third on a throwing error following the conclusion of the ground out. Cehajic stood strong though and recorded a strikeout that was finished on the throw to first after a dropped third strike to end the game.
Sam Larson started for the Green Wave and went the first 5.2 innings with three runs and four walked allow while recording seven strikeouts. Jake Toporek threw an inning with three hits allowed and two runs (one earned). Jacob Moore (1-1) pitched the next 1.1 innings and was credited with the win despite surrendering three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Cehajic got the last three outs for his first save of the season and the fifth of his career.
Wachs helped lead the offense with two RBIs, a walk, a hit, a hit-by-pitch, and a run scored. Nate Johnson had a hit, two RBIs, and a run scored. Agabedis tallied a pair of hits plus both an RBI and a run scored. Tanner Chun scored a pair of runs and had a hit plus a walk. Matthias Haas scored two runs plus had an RBI and a walk.
USF's Nolan Bernard (3-2) took the loss. Bernard allowed two runs in his 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.
USF scored first and pushed a run across in the second on the bounding RBI single from Bradke Lowry.
The Bulls scored a second run on Jack Lutz's RBI ground out to go up 2-0.
Tulane cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame as Agabedis raced home on throwing error off of the sacrifice bunt from Harrison.
The Green Wave took the lead with two runs in the fourth, 3-2, on a Liolios single up the middle followed by a two-out single to center by Agabedis.
Tulane added three runs in the fifth, 6-2, on a Haas ground out and a two-run RBI single from Nate Johnson.
USF broke through for a run, 6-3, in the sixth on an RBI double from Earley.
The Bulls scored two more runs in the seventh on a bases loaded pass ball to score Lohry and a an RBI ground out to third by Jakc Lutz to draw to within one, 6-5.
USF kept coming and tied the game in the eighth inning with a run on a single from Matt Rose setting up the eventful bottom of the frame and top of the ninth
Next, Tulane plays the rubber game of the series on Sunday, May 10, at 1 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The team will hold a pregame ceremony to honor the team's 14 seniors prior to the final home game of the season.
