Doshia Woods begins her 11th season as a member of the Tulane women’s basketball coaching staff in the 2020-21 campaign. Woods serves as the recruiting coordinator. She is primarily responsible for the development of the Green Wave’s perimeter players, assists with scouting, recruiting, admissions, compliance and oversees student-athletes’ academic progress. During her time at Tulane, Woods helped the Green Wave post six consecutive 20-plus win seasons in her first six years and seven straight postseason berths, including a 2015 NCAA Tournament appearance.
Her impact on the team’s guards has been evident in Kolby Morgan (2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18), Leslie Vorpahl (2015-16, 2016-17), Danielle Blagg (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15), Jamie Kaplan (2013-14), Olivia Grayson (2011-12) and Tiffany Aidoo (2010-11) who claimed all-conference honors in those years. In 2019, freshman guard Dynah Jones was named to the American Athletic Conference's All-Freshman Team. In 2020, Jones was named Sixth Player of the Year.
Woods' guard development was quite evident in the development of both Vorpahl and Morgan. Vorpahl wrapped a career in which she was just the second person in school history to surpass both 1,000 career points and 500 career assists. She ranked in the top 20 in the country in assists as a senior and was named American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete on top of that, following in the footsteps of 2015 winner and Senior CLASS Award First-Team All-American Jamie Kaplan.
Meanwhile, Morgan has went down as one of the greatest players in program history. The only player to reach 1,000 career points in her first two seasons at Tulane, and the only player to score 600 or more points in three different seasons, Morgan finished her career with 2,240 points to finish second all-time at Tulane.
As a team, Tulane's three-point shooting from its guards was never better than in 2017-18. That season, the Wave knocked down 205 three-pointers, setting a new school record in that category. The team also broke the school record with 606 attempted 3-pointers. In fact, the past four years have all ranked inside the top eight in program history in made three-pointers for a single season.
A noted recruiter, Woods has been instrumental in landing talented student-athletes everywhere she has been and then develop that talent she has helped sign. Her first recruiting class at Tulane proved to be a solid group as the four freshmen – Blagg, Tiffany Dale, Adesuwa Ebomwonyi and Jamie Kaplan – combined to earn C-USA Freshman of the Week honors on seven occasions. Ultimately, all four players cemented their names forever in the Tulane record books, all finishing on the top-10 list for most games played while accounting for 46.1 percent of the team’s scoring over the four years. Woods helped land a national top 50 recruit and the No. 1 recruit in Louisiana’s Gatorade player of the year, Miss Basketball and the No. 1 recruit in Louisiana, Jerkaila Jordan, in the 2020 class.
Woods joined the Tulane staff for the 2010-11 campaign following two seasons in the Big 12 at the University of Missouri from 2008 to 2010, where she recruited and coached three all-conference players. Before Missouri, Woods spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Oregon State from 2005 to 2008. In 2005-06, the Beavers posted a 10 game improvement over the previous season and earned a berth to the WNIT Tournament, advancing to the second round. With the Beavers, Woods recruited and coached four all-conference and two all-freshman team players. Woods’ recruiting efforts helped the Beavers land the Alaska and Gatorade Player of the Year in Talisa Rhea, as well as Judie Lomax. Rhea became the 15th OSU player to score 1,000 career points.
Prior to serving as an assistant coach at New Mexico State University in 2004-05, Woods was an assistant coach at her Alma Mater Western Illinois University from 2001 to 2004. The program posted a combined 57-30 record in her three seasons, as well as earning Mid-Continent (now Summit League) regular season championships and WNIT berths in 2002-03 and 2003-04. In her three seasons, Woods recruited & coached seven all-conference & two all-freshman team players.
A native of Topeka, Kansas, and a graduate of Topeka High School, Woods began her collegiate playing career at Barton Community College and later accepted a scholarship to Western Illinois University. Woods earned an associate’s degree from Barton and completed her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in psychology at Western Illinois. She is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Womens Leaders, and WeCoach. Actively involved with the WBCA, Woods has served as a roundtable presenter for the WBCA national convention on several occasions. Woods is also a representative of the assistant coaches and education workgroup committee with the WBCA. Woods was selected attend NEXTUP and the NCAA Basketball Coaches Academy in 2019, two programs designed for professional development of assistant coaches who aspire to be a head coach. Woods earned her master's degree in Kinesiology, Health & Wellness at Tulane in 2020.
