
Tulane Needs Extra Innings To Knock Off USF, 9-7

TAMPA, Fla. - Jake Gautreau sent in the game winning run in the top of the 11th to give Tulane (37-18-1, 20-6-1 C-USA) a 9-7 win over South Florida (28-17, 14-13 C-USA) on Sunday.
With the win, Tulane won each of its Conference USA series this season, the first time TU has accomplished this in the league's history.
Shaky fielding allowed the Green Wave to score first as Andy Cannizaro reached and scored on errors by the Bulls defense. Steve Shirley sent in the second run with his second double of the weekend of the weekend. Matt Groff gave the Wave a 5-0 lead in the third as he hit a bases clearing double into right center.
Tulane starter Dan O'Gara held the Bulls scoreless until the third inning as an error and a bases clearing double put three runs on the board. O'Gara was replaced by Belanager in the seventh. A three run Bulls bottom of the eighth tied the score at seven runs each.
Jake Gautreau sent in the winning runs as he singled up the center allowing two runs to score. Tulane is 2-1 in extra innings this year.
Groff recorded a game high three RBI. Shirley was 3-for-6 with one run scored.
Tulane's Brandon Belanger (4-2) picked up his fourth win of the season as he pitched the final 4 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits no earned runs and struck out three.
South Florida's David Richtberg (0-1) got the loss, his first of the year. He went 3 2/3 innings gave up three hits and struck out two.
Tulane takes on UAB in its first game of the 2000 Conference USA Tournament on Wednesday, May 17 in St. Petersburg, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
