
Baseball Shuts Down Southern Miss 10-3

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane (35-16-1, 18-4-1 C-USA) left handed pitcher Jared Berkowitz shut down Southern Miss (30-21, 14-7 C-USA) as he allowed only one earned run through 8 1/3 innings en route to a 10-3 win on Saturday afternoon.
With the win Berkowitz (12-1) became the only pitcher in Tulane history to post two 12 plus win seasons. Berkowitz struck out eight and walked only one in his 16 appearance of the season. The only run given up by Berkowitz was a solo home run by Southern Miss' Chris Finnegan in the fourth inning. Matt Foster finished the game for the Green Wave, as he went 2/3 of an innings and gave up two runs.
Tulane scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings and one in the third to give them an early 3-0 lead. Andy Cannizaro hit a two-run home run in the second inning, which was followed by a Steve Shirley solo homer in the third.
Finnegan put the Golden Eagles on the board in the fourth with his 11 long ball of the season. Tulane piled five more runs through the final three innings to give the Wave a 10-1 advantage, before USM's Jeff Cook hit a two run shot off Foster in the ninth.
Cannizaro, who was 1-for-19 over his last four games, went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI. Shirley was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. James Jurries also sent in two runs.
USM's Finnegan was 4-for-4 with one run scored.
Getting the loss for the Golden Eagles was Shea Douglas (6-3) who went five innings, gave up five runs and struck out seven.
The teams wrap up the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. The six Green Wave seniors will be honored in a pre game ceremony beginning at 12:50.
