Tulane Comeback Sinks LSU, 7-6

METAIRIE, La. - The Tulane (29-7) baseball team completed a sweep of LSU (25-10-1) with its second win of the season over the Tigers, a 7-6 victory at Zephyr Field on Wednesday evening.
In front of a record crowd of 11,669, the Green Wave remains undefeated against Louisiana opponents with eight wins this season.
Tulane trailed heading into the eighth when a little two-out magic helped the Wave come back from a 5-2 deficit. With a runner on second, Steve Shirley doubled into center sending in one run. Shirley scored on a throwing error and a third run was added on a Michael Aubrey single into center.
On the evening, Shirley collected two clutch hits while driving in two runs.
The teams entered the ninth tied at five runs each. LSU scored one run on a David Raymer ground out to second. Tulane's Jon Kaplan began the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk and scored on Jake Gautreau's only hit of the night, a double down the left field line. With the game tied at six runs each Tulane had the bases loaded with no outs. James Jurries reached on a fielder's choice and Andy Cannizaro scored the winning run on a throwing error by shortstop, Ryan Theriot, giving the Wave a 7-6 victory. This marks the eighth time this season Tulane has won a game in their last at bat.
New Orleans native, Barth Melius picked up the win, bringing his season record to 4-0. Melius, went one inning, struck out one, and posted another strong performance over the Tigers. Tulane starter Michael Aubrey went a career high 6 2/3 innings, while striking out three and walking only one batter.
LSU's Roy Corcoran (5-2) took the loss after giving up the winning run in the ninth. Starter Lane Mestepey had a very solid outing against the Wave, giving up only one earned run in 7 2/3 innings. This marks the final regular season meeting between the two teams.
The Tigers scored first, as Bryan Moore hit a one out double in the second inning and advanced on an error by the Tulane center fielder. He then scored on a ground out by Matt Heath.
Aubrey extended his hitting streak to 15 games in the second, with the first Green Wave hit of the game.
Tulane tied the game in the third as an Andy Cannizaro sacrifice fly allowed Anthony Giarratano to score.
A two-run fourth inning and a home run by Todd Linden in the fifth gave the Tigers a 4-1 advantage.
Shirley lined a two-out single into left bringing the Wave within two runs in the sixth.
LSU answered with one run in the seventh, for a 5-2 lead.
Tulane hosts Conference USA leader Houston in a three-game series this weekend. The first game is Friday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m.
