
Tulane Baseball Falls To Houston 3-1

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Despite out hitting the Cougars seven to six, the Tulane (29-8, 8-5 C-USA) baseball team was defeated by Conference USA league leader Houston (21-18, 12-1 C-USA) 3-1 on Friday evening.
Tulane had ample chances to catch the Cougars leaving eight runners stranded on base.
The Houston pitching staff recorded 14 strikeouts. The number marks the most a Tulane team has struck out since March 3, 1999 in a game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Houston scored one run in the first inning and added two more runs in the second. Keith Whatley, Thanos Papavasiliou and Keith Ahrens were responsible for sending in the Cougar runs. Whatley was 2-for-4 on the evening.
Steve Shirley sent in the Wave's only run of the evening on a two out double in the third. He was 2-for-4 with two doubles, the seventh time in his career he recorded a pair of doubles in a game. Andy Cannizaro and Matt Groff had two hit apiece.
The winning pitcher was Brad Sullivan. He improved to 3-5 on the season as he went six innings and struck out eight.
The losing pitcher was Matt Foster (7-3) who lasted only two innings. He gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits.
The teams play game two on Saturday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m.
